really awful- Typical Repair Cost:
- $6,830
- Average Mileage:
- 117,300 miles
- Total Complaints:
- 3 complaints
Most common solutions:
- replacement of lifters and camshaft (2 reports)
- replace engine (1 reports)
Lifter failures on hemi engines seem to be way too common. At under 100k miles a total engine failure is unacceptable and dodge/fca/ram should be held liable for selling lemons to an unsuspecting public. The repair cost is $10k and a whole new engine is $15k. That is currently very close if not what the car is worth if it was running fine!! totally ridiculous.

Same premature lifter and camshaft failure others are having. I perform regular maintenance and take very good care of my truck. No heavy use, mostly highway miles, and never abused. Although mine was out of warranty, it was obvious this was a manufacturer defect. This type of problem shouldn't be happening at this stage of the truck's life. I contacted FCA and they would not own the problem or offer to help. They said they might have been able to help had I been the original owner. I bought this truck with about 25k on it and it was a certified pre-owned (that is the confidence booster they use to sell the truck). I did mention this, but they said it didn't matter. I contacted the NHTSA and filed a complaint to investigate and see if this could qualify as a recall (RAM customer service said the recalls had to be initiated from the NHTSA). I'll also be contacting the attorney general in my state to file a complaint as I'm clearly not the only one having this problem. RAM website says "durable and reliable". Not so much.

I have a 2014 Dodge Ram Longhorn with the 5.7 liter hemi engine. I noticed a tick in the engine about 2 1/2 years ago and rough shifting about two years ago. I always get major services bracket everything but oil changes bracket done at the dealership and have mentioned both issues to them several times. At one point I thought my transmission was failing and have a receipt from them saying everything was fine. In fact this is what they told me every time I brought it in not to worry about it it's just a hemi engine they take. Plus the fact that I'm getting into higher mileage was a secondary answer.
I recently had an exhaust issue where the vehicle sounded like a bit of a race car went under load going uphill. I had read that this was sometimes an exhaust manifold issue so brought it in to a private shop close to my house to have this repair done. This private auto repair told me that yes the bolts were cracked on the manifold but that was the least of my worries because my cylinder was misfiring. They swapped plugs cleared codes swapped injectors all with no improvement then they used a borescope to inspect the inside of the cylinder and found vertical scoring. They told me this was a very common issue on these engines and that I need a whole new engine!! When I inquired on the price I was told a eye popping $18,000 minimum plus tax!! Who would do that on a 12 year old vehicle with 260,000 kilometers.
I believe the value of the vehicle in perfect running order is right around 25,000 dollars. Clearly I'm not putting 20K into this truck although I love it :( I've done a bunch of research I know this is a common issue there's class action lawsuits for it and Chrysler has even issued star reports on the issue. I've also read way too many times that it's common for the dealership to cover up the issue or brush it off as a normal noise which is exactly what happened to me. Unbelievable that they would do that to someone. Anyway I have no idea what I'm gonna do maybe just drive it till it dies. Has anyone had any luck in Canada getting Chrysler to do any repairs? Any help appreciated.
