This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Ram dealer.
Lithia Dodge in Medford Or was able to replicate the problem on the first visit. They kept it over night to start cold the next day. A new transmission was sent by Chrysler.
Update from Mar 26, 2015: I am now on the third transmission (at 13000 miles) for the truck and it still has issues. The problem with the ruff shift at a cold start seems to have disappeared with this transmission, but this one "slips" when accelerating from a start. There is also an occasional grinding noise when shifting from reverse to drive after reversing. Although the truck has been at the dealership more than I think it should, the dealership has been good about addressing the problems and Chrysler has been good about sending replacement transmissions. Has to go back in to see if this is now a software issue with the timing of the shift pattern, or another faulty transmission. There is some talk about it falling under the definition of a lemon/buy back.
Update from Aug 4, 2015: Chrysler was kind and did a buy back, replacing ithe 2014 with a 2015 Ram 1500. But this time I opted for thew Hemi and the 6 speed. Loved the gas mileage with the V6 and the 8 Speed, but to much time in the shop with the transmission. Two very different trucks. What I have noticed is that the V6 with the 8 speed spent a lot of time hunting between gears and down shifting on slight highway elevations. The stronger Hemi does not see to have this issue. I have high hopes for this truck, wish me luck :)

At around the 10 month mark or 11000km's the transmission started shifting hard from first to second, it only happens once, so you have to be paying attention. I back my truck in my driveway every night, putting it in drive and then, rolling out with not a lot of throttle will cause the rpms to continue to climb, if you don't adjust the throttle position, it will climb as high as 4500rpm before suddenly slamming into 2nd gear. This is enough to jerk your head back and shuffle the keys, spill the coffee, it is very noticeable. Even my oblivious to anything mechanically wrong wife notices it when she drives it in the morning.
I've brought it into the dealership 3 times now, left it overnight, but because of the nature of the issue, it is easy for them to say no fault found and send me on my way.
The last time I brought it in, they did a quick learn and it did help for a little while but after a couple months, the problem started to return. After 6 months, it is very noticeable and going back to the dealership again to have them look at it overnight.
