Recently had the power steering unit replaced by fca (50% my cost) and filed a NHTSA complaint. After approx 2,000 miles has developed very stiff and jerky steering assist. Wheel will not return to center when you let go, and turning corners is a two handed, reduced speed affair as not to collide with other vehicles. I have determined that the universal joint on the steering shaft is bad. I can spray lubricant on it and the problem goes away for a while then returns as it dries out.

Was able to muscle the vehicle back under control. Took to a dealer ship (glockner of ashland ky) and they had the vehicle for 4 weeks and could not find the problem. There were no codes present in the computer or warning lights on the dash indicating a malfunction. 3 days later I took it to kunes country of macomb il and they determined the power rack steering assembly needed replaced at a cost of $2,430. I declined. Will fix myself. New unit from detroit axle is $1,399. Vehicle had 44,800 miles at the time of malfunction.

Must purchase used complete steering column just because a small plastic clip broke safety hazard due to having to adjust the seat to properly see gauges. Known engine problems with the 5.7 hemi engine being tappets, valve springs, cam shaft, all low to mid mileage engines. Valve springs breaking and dropping valves that could destroy your engine causing to stall and or lockup at high speed affecting steering and breaking with the engine unable to run. I was driving around a curve when suddenly lost all power steering. I was able to slow the vehicle before going off of the colvert on the opposite side of the road. I was fortunate that there wasn't any oncoming traffic in the other lane and that I could slow down to prevent vehicle damage. This sudden loss of power steering assist is very dangerous! it may not sound that bad just losing power steering but when you do not expect it and it happens it is very dangerous, especially around curves or at the stop light making a right and tight turn. I am a young man that can control non power steering vehicles but not unexpectedly!

The date is 3/29/2015 at 5:10pm. I want to document my effort to clear this problem and the response I am getting from the san antonio Dodge dealership. Note: I have had this truck for about a year and the steering wheel starts to vibrate at about 73mph and gets worse as the speed increases to the point that the vehicle is going to shake the front end mechanism loose. This was not the case at the start but is progressively getting worse to the point that it is becoming a safety hazard. The problem started approximately at 17,000 miles and continues to get worse at 19,000 miles.

While merging into the left lane on a four lane highway, my steering locked up and jerked my truck further left into oncoming traffic. Fortunately I was able to correct it and barely avoided an head on collision. I was told by a mechanic that it's the epa power control circuit board or the esp gear box. Dealership tells me there's no recall on my vehicle. I could have been killed by this default in the power steering. The truck is only one year old. How could something this critical to safety simply go out already. Someone please please do something to help us consumers, for the sake of all our safety. Also I was driving about 45 mph, merging left, I was jerked probably 10 to 15 ft, enough that I was put into the other lane. It has continued to do this randomly causing me to almost crash several times. I have now parked the truck until further investigation from my mechanic or Dodge dealership. It'll have to be towed for fear of me crashing.

Two accidents and was denied recall - even though my 2015 Dodge Ram 1500 steering component has been defective and caused an accident. Accident #1 February 16, 2016 brakes did not function well. Car did not brake well in the rain, was coming to a red light with a car in front of me, had to push on the brakes and they were not braking. Dodge Ram 1500 skid and hit the back of the car in front. Accident #2 March 12, 2016 loss of steering control and brakes did not work. I was stopped at a red light and it was raining. When the light turned green I started a slow left turn when: (1) the Dodge Ram lost traction, (2) Dodge Ram over steered to the left from the steering input suddenly losing power, and (3) the check engine light and ABS light came on and (4) my brakes stopped working. I tried to counter steer to move the truck to the side to the street but the truck would not stop. The truck then skid, went over the curb and hit a light post that fell on the right side of the Dodge Ram and damaged the car heavily. If it had fallen on the roof my passengers and I would be dead. Police report and four witnesses. Eleven days after the second accident, a recall for Dodge Ram 1500 model years 2015-2016 came out for steering. The recall is for the identical malfunctioning steering component that caused my second accident. Called manufacturer and was told that my VIN # is not part of the recall, which means for them that my car was made at a different facility from the recalls and is not of concern for them. Despite that my 2015 Dodge Ram 1500 is the make, model and year of the recall and despite the fact that I told them I had just had that exact steering malfunction, I was denied the recall.
