1500 Big Horn Lone Star 5.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 2,100 miles

With only 2000 miles on my new Ram 1500 Bighorn Lone Star, the parking brake locks up while we're on vacation in Ouray, CO. Two hours immobile, we finally reached someone at Brandon Dodge in Littleton, CO who taught me how to reset the computer (by grounding the battery cables to each other, not just disconnecting the battery, which I'd already tried). We continued our trip, towing our travel trailer behind us, but the brakes would RE-ENGAGE every time we turned off the truck and parked, and I had to get out, open the hood and remove the cables from the battery, grounding them together for a full minute to get the brakes to disengage.

We drove hours to Littleton, CO and left the truck there for 8 days (not in our vacation plans) to allow them time to fix the brakes which would be needed on our 14,000 mile 5 month long RV trip (we were in our first month of this journey). Brandon mechanics were in contact with factory engineers and attempted several possible fixes, but the problem could not be resolved. We left Littleton after Brandon Dodge mechanically disabled the brakes. This allowed us to depart, although the warning bell and dash light continued to let us know that the parking brake needed service - for the next four months!

Upon returning home to Texas, the truck went in to our home dealership, Hoyte CDJR in Sherman, TX for warranty service of numerous items at 16,200 miles. By this time, we were experiencing the steering wheel issue where the steering sticks at 11 o'clock (they replaced the steering rack), the fuel filler issue where the gas pump only allows 1/10 gallon before kickback - causing up to 30 minute fuel fills (they replaced the fuel tank due to a pressure issue they found), and the melted rear bumper cover (they replaced the cover trim piece after relocating the tailpipe).

They have ATTEMPTED to repair the compass (which indicated S when facing N, etc), and the parking brakes, which continue to lock up, but have found NO SOLUTION after 15 days at the dealership, with constant contact with FCA engineers at the factory. The service manager, Chris Landino, offered no other possible avenues other than contacting FCA Customer Care, which I did this morning. I'm waiting to hear from them. We had to sign a mediation agreement when we bought the truck, common in our area. We've had numerous CJDR products in the past with NO major issues.
