2500 Heavy Duty Cummins

I was driving down the Interstate when all of a sudden my truck started vibrating/shaking so bad that I could hardly control the steering. Everything flew off of my seats & the phone holder that I had suctioned onto windshield came off. I had no idea what was going on and I was lucky that the vehicles next to me & behind me saw my truck shaking so bad that they also slowed down so that I could get over & off the Interstate within minutes. I had the tires balanced less than 3000 miles prior because there was a shaking (nothing like this) when I drove the Interstate.

Update from Jun 21, 2017: Dealership shop replaced the Track Bar & Steering Dampener after I experienced what they called a "Death Wobble". they said my truck was good to go but I still had a vibration when driving over 60mph. Took it back to the shop & after looking at it for a day theysaid they do not know what is causing the issue. So now they are keeping it another day to look further into the drive trane.

Chrysler knows that this is an issue & has been for quite a few years, yet they still have no solution to fixing the problem & those of us purchasing these trucks have no idea about the problems we are going to be experiencing and the amount of time we will be without a vehicle & the time our trucks will be in the shop.

2500 5.7L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 32,000 miles

I was driving down the highway at highway speed and hit a small pot hole. As soon as I hit the bump, the truck started to shake violently. I had to pull over and dramatically reduce my speed for the shaking to level off. This was truly a terrifying experience. I had my son in the car and I feel like we could have been in a serious accident. This was the third incident of this nature that I have experienced with my dodge truck!!

I had RAM 1500 with the HEMI, and it was a little hard on gas when I pulled my bass boat from Irvine Kentucky To Alabama three or four times a year. I can do that now that I'm a disabled Wounded Veteran and can't work, after been blown up three times in the middle east. The first Gulf War in Iraq, 2004 in Iraq then again 2013 in Afghanistan so after 33 years in the US ARMY, the had to medically discharge me. So I traded my smaller truck in for a RAM 2500 with the 6.7 Cummins, wow the power is amazing. However after only about 12,000 miles, it developed at first, an annoying vibration.

I traded with a 5 star dealer in Nicholasville Kentucky, called Chrysler on Nicholasville. The first time I took my truck back, they drove and said they couldn't find anything wrong. So maybe it was just me, I had my brother drive. I hadn't said anything as soon as we got up to highway speed, he said "what the hell" dude you need to have your truck checked, its got a bad vibration. So I took it to a Dealer in Madison County Kentucky, Mann Chrysler. the mechanic drove it and said they were gonna load test, they did it made no difference at all.

So I took my truck to tire discounters. the guy said sometimes the tires that the factory uses have been setting for a while can cause that, so $1,300 later and a brand new set of Michelin Defender LTX. That didn't help anything except the tire company, and tire discounters. So the vibration just keeps gets worst, so I go back to dealer, he says the tires are out of balance. He balances the tires, charges me $74, I drive off thinking, awesome. Nope my $50,000 truck is probably now the biggest piece of sh*t I've ever owned.

Since then I even did some stuff for the hell of it, new rotors, brakes, front and rear, I've had the drive shaft checked. My only resolution is to talk to the JAG office, I'm sure they will love to have a shot at a car company that was recently bailed out. Especially selling a sucky truck to a Veteran and not making it right. I would say this to all my fellow brothers and sisters in arms. I'm giving Chrysler "ONE" more opportunity to fix this, then its gloves off. Fix my truck or give a new one.....

Purchased truck new in Dec 2015 ($50k) as a 2nd vehicle to haul our camper. Truck is loaded and has camper package, towing package etc. Did not experience issue until hooked up new camper in spring 2016. For whatever reason would only get vibration at around 72mph with camper hooked up. Took camper back to dealer and had tires balanced, after hooking up several campers to my Ram, we were able to isolate that was NOT the camper and was the vehicle. Have family members who work for major OEM in driveline areas, hooked up NVH equipment and were able to identify vibration as a wheel and tire order. Took truck to the dealer and tried to advise what was going on with vehicle and was treated like I do not know what I am talking about. Dealer balanced tires and when I picked up truck issue was worse. Took back and where unable to make better, dealer replaced (1) tire, rebalanced wheels again and sent me down the road, vibration still present. Was heading on a trip and needed to get truck fixed, dealers all busy and could not get to my truck for 2wks. Took truck to Belle Tire and load force balanced tires, all of them were way off. There tech spent 3hrs match mounting and trying to fix. Was able to get about 90% gone. Went to pay at Belle Tire ($120), service manager said "No charge" Belle Tire should teach FCA dealers how to be customer oriented...!

Drove truck several thousand miles and issue came back. Took back to dealer and had balance again. This time they replaced the Firestone tires with BFG tires, load force balanced and issue was 90% fixed. 5,000 miles later issue is back and worse than ever. Called the dealer and they did not even want to talk to me. Called FCA Customer assistance and they were horrible. I was able to get a DM - District Manager to agree to ride with me. Took (3) weeks to make this happen! Finally day comes to ride with DM and what a joke. We get up to highway speeds, the DM's hand is shaking so bad. The clown turns to me and says" Sir you obviously haven't owned many HD trucks before have you?" This is a normal condition for a HD truck. I have owned many heavy duty trucks and advised him to show me another new truck that does this? I am still waiting for this to take place. The DM further insults my technical ability by telling me that balancing tires every 5,000 miles is normal maintenance...... My tires and wheels have been off the truck so many times they have had to replace the lug nuts because they were damaged or worn out. Next step is to rebalance tires again and send me out the door for another 5,000-8,000 miles. So embarrassing to have people in your truck and vibrate down the road... Truck is junk, don't buy a RAM 2500 HD, unless you want the vibration package...!

Update from Aug 4, 2016: Update Finally got some answers regarding this issue. If you own a Ram 2500 with 5 link rear suspension you will have this issue as all these trucks are super sensitive to vibrations (tire balance) in the rear of the vehicle. Typical leaf spring suspension used for years will not allow to transfer to the frame of the vehicle, but with this style, tire balance is critical. Firestone also had an issue on how they were storing some tires in Saltillo, MX where the truck is built causing issues with their tires, coupled by a balancer in the plant that is antique and does not allow them to get the tires balanced low enough that the vehicle will not pick up on it. Sounds like they are going or will be going to a 3rd party to balance and sequence wheels and tires for this plant. When it comes to balancing tires and wheels (load force) is critical. You can have a balanced tire but if the load force is excessive (greater than 20lbs force) sensitive vehicles will pick this up. Put a trailer on the back and you now even excite the issue greater because the suspension is loaded and held more. If you experience this issue on your Ram 2500 make the dealer load force balance these tires and replace tires as needed until the force is less than 20lbs force. This will only be a temporary fix until you drive the vehicle and the tires load force become higher from normal driving conditions and tire wear. Dealers and the area zone manager are aware of this issue. This issue is one of FCA's top issues on the HD - (DJ) platform. There is no permanent corrective action at this time to resolve. I also heard they are working on a special tool that will allow the dealers (who do have this $25k balancer) to install the wheel on a hub type mount on the balancer versus the old style way of using cones through the center of the wheel. This method will give an even better balance in terms of load force reduction. Understand not all dealers have this load force balancer as they are independently owned and not required. This special tool is also an option for the dealers. They will not fix this issue completely until the new model changeover probably around MY18. I am sick of it and time to call an attorney and get this lemon Squeezed.. Good luck.

PS: Look at the inside lip of your wheels and see if there is engraving placed on the rim. If there is, its an indication that your wheels have been sorted or rechecked by a 3rd party prior to getting them built on the vehicle. My area rep would not replace my wheels for this engraving which really pisses me off as I am sure the aluminum will corrode over time... Pic attached.
