Striker position also affects closing effort. Prior to ordering this part for a customer stating the Tailgate will not auto release when the tailgate is closed or is hard to close, first try adjusting the tailgate strikers to minimize the force required to close. The strikers must be centered up/down in the latch opening. You have to balance tailgate flushness and closing effort by moving the strikers fore or aft.
