Ion 2.2L

  • Manual transmission
  • 40,000 miles

Inherited this piece of junk from my parents not too long ago. Parents were original owners, well maintained over the years (at dealer and local garage after end of warranty). Very low mileage, parents would drive average 4000 miles/yr since purchased new. I have only driven this car for a month now (approx 600 miles of open road. very little stop and go traffic if any). Car has developed a fuel line leak from the back. Identical problem to fuel delivery recall. However, car not part of list identified by NHSTA however that problem is pale compared to rear door issues.

Car is parked outdoors and have had multiple events of rain to snow to hard freeze low temps, Doors mostly frozen and hard to open however both rear passenger doors would open but refuse to close. Appears like the latches for door locks do not work properly. First had problem last week where rear passenger side door would no longer close, played around with door for about an hour before door closed properly, I have not attempted to open the door since, I was wanting to bring to local mechanic however the garage was closed for the holidays.

Now it is the driver side rear door, playing around and trying to work the latch I noticed that while testing the handle on about one out of every three attempts the latch does not appear to fully close it seems to stop half way in it's throw motion. Finally managed to close door however just to ensure it would be safe gave two good hits from the inside to see if door would swing open...nothing happens, door appeared to be fully closed.

While driving on the road in a round about rear driver side door swings wide open at 20 miles an hour....dogs were in back seat...then while sitting inside house watching football seems like the alarm for car went off, I thought I might have sat on the remote and triggered alarm...remote was not in my pockets...I go outside to check and find the rear door open by 8-10 inches....Have owned about 15-20 cars over the years and never wound up with a car gushing out gasoline and doors that swing open while driving....this is exactly why GM and Chrysler's are still bottom of the barrel of the automotive industry, I cannot believe that these driving junkers are allowed to circulate for they are moving safety hazards.

Instead of putting lots of $$ to fix this junk will invest the money in my 2008 Honda Element with 160 000 miles, it may have a lot of life on it but at least it's safe and reliable.
