  • Automatic transmission
  • 156,000 miles

Hard shifting. The automatic transmission just started being very rough and jerking my small little car around, it was visible I am sure and quite embarrassing. Not to mention, I knew that if I continued to drive the car this way I would damage the motor mounts among other things, even though it continued to drive. If I would have continued to drive the vehicle with the tranny shaking about when it shifts, extra force would have been consistently put on the engine mounts and hoses going to the transmission. If we had not been "do it ourselfers" this would have cost a pretty penny.

The problem was the line pressure control solenoid within the valve body. We decided it would be proactive to just replace the entire valve body, versus each solenoid as they broke, Saturn's were known for this. We called the GM dealership to price the part and we also called a local transmission repair shop. they wanted between $700-$950 for the valve body. I could not believe it. I debated on selling the vehicle, since it was only my cute little gas saving summer vehicle, but then I came across a guy on Ebay that rebuilds the Saturn valve body and upgrades the for only $100.00, I was skeptical at first, but I figured what was the harm. we bought it and it shifted flawless after that, could hardly even feel any shifts. It was like a new vehicle. The vehicle has 15 thousand miles on it since then and still is working fine.

Now it is my gas saving, reliable, oil burner that she always was.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 82,000 miles

The automatic transmission just started having a fit one day, but it continued to drive. Driving the transmission in its condition eventually let to other problems. With the tranny shaking about when it shifts, extra force was consistently put on the engine mounts and hoses going to the transmission. Mounts eventually began to break down and hoses tore. These were symptoms of the larger problem and I treated the symptoms myself until the eventual retirement of the vehicle.
