Grinding noise from the rear end got progressively worse as we were driving down the highway. Last time this happened, it took several weeks of driving before the grinding got really bad, but time it only took 1 1/2 hours. By then it was also making loud banging noises, so we pulled into a repair shop & had to get a rental car for the rest of our trip.

Turns out the rear wheel bearings were shot, again (the other side this time). Apparently whatever the problem with the original bearings was, it wasn't some fluke that only happened to one side. Now I'm wondering when the front bearings will fail...

Forester XS 2.5L

Rear end started making a grinding noise while driving. It started out barely noticeable & got progressively worse over a week or two. Couldn't tell if it was coming from one side but it was pretty loud. The mechanic found the rear wheel bearings on one side were shot. Pretty strange for the wheel bearings to fail at relatively low mileage.
