Car has less than 60,000 miles which is predominantly 50 mph highway driving so it is outrageous the head gasket should be failing. Dealer quoted $1,500 to repair and said no chance of Subaru helping. Had a 2001 Forester with a factory recall for the head gasket and they treated with a sealer in the coolant. This appears to be a similar problem. Am really down on Subaru right now.

This is our 4th Subaru, 3 of which did not owe us a penny and were close to or at 200k. We have also had 4 Toyota and 1 Nissan truck, which were all great cars. This has been my worst car. I expected it to go at least 60k more miles. Fixing the head gasket is a very big expense for us but we have no choice. It also needs the cat which went at 93k and is also very expensive. Subaru should have corrected this gasket problem long ago. It still seems to be a problem.
I loved my Forester. Just the right size for me. I don't want a smaller or larger car. I emailed Subaru and they sent a reply saying there were no recalls and offered me $250 towards a new car. What a slap in the face. Guess loyalty means nothing to them. Right now I really hate them as they certainly knew there were problems with the cheap gaskets they used, especially since that gasket maker is being sued by other car manufacturers, but not Subaru.
I hope anyone thinking about buying a Subaru will do the research and not buy one. Of course the biggest dilemma is what to buy next. Two mechanics told me they are making all the cars cheaper, even Toyota, which is having it's own problems, as well as Honda. Thanks for listening. Hope this is helpful to other consumers.

Blew a head gasket while driving around town. Cylinder ring was missing, causing the cylinder head to melt.
