Terribly awful gas mileage, rough idle, engine almost dies, sudden loss of power, engine light eventually came on. Took it to the dealer, told me that they had fixed the problem.

I purchased a 2014 Subaru Forester on March 23, 2013. Approximately 2 months after purchase, the check engine light and hill assist warning lights came on. I immediately stopped, called the dealership and was told this happened with Subarus sometimes and to continue driving. They told me the only thing I wouldn't be able to use when this happened was the cruise control. So, no big deal, I thought it was just a glitch and sure enough the warning lights eventually went off only to come back on again soon after. This has gone on for 3 years now and the engine runs very rough - to the point where it jerks and hesitates badly, especially on acceleration.
The dealership is well aware of these issues as I mention it every time I bring it in for servicing however, each time I am told they don't know how to fix it. My last "repair", in Aug, 2016 involved a major decarbonization service and cost me $500 which resulted in 2 days of smooth driving, only to be followed by the warning lights coming back on and the engine running very rough again. Since I service my vehicle on a regular basis and mention this problem each time I bring it in - how can they possibly not figure it out?? They just tell me this "never happens" but coincidentally, a few months ago when I brought it in, I was taking the dealer shuttle with a man who told me his Forester was in for the exact same thing!!! How weird is that???
I am so frustrated and feel Subaru has totally failed as far as standing by their product. The other day, I was trying to merge into traffic and the engine hesitated so much that I wasn't sure I was going to make it! This is a safety issue! There is no doubt in my mind that some time down the road, an accident will be inevitable...and then what?? Subaru - stand by your product!!! Acknowledge that there is something very wrong with the engine/catalytic converter (or whatever the problem is) and fix it so that these hesitation/acceleration issues stop. The other day, I was trying to merge into traffic and the engine hesitated so much that I wasn't sure I was going to make it!! This is a safety issue!
I have voiced my concerns to Subaru Canada to no avail and feel I am wasting by breath. As a business, it is Subaru's reputation on the line but they don't seem to mind. As a customer, I can only pass on to others what my experience with Subaru has been...terrible!
