It was stalling when letting off gas for stops, turns, slowing down. Very nerve-wracking, especially being a manual - I have become very familiar with the hazard light button to make drivers behind me back off when stalling happens. Problem has been intermittent since late 2017, a few months after purchasing. I have replaced MAF sensor 4 times so far, 3rd and current sensor from Subaru dealer. Replaced ECG valve, bank 1 O2 sensor, in 2019. Had it at a garage for diagnosis in May 2019. Intermittent bad behavior for them, totally corrected itself while hooked up for testing on their computer - fuel ratio numbers were all over the place but they couldn't get the full test done. Got it to at least pass emissions, for $20, plus $360 for labor with no diagnosis.
There were suggestions of a possible bad fuel injector, bad computer, and verbal diagnosis that MAF sensor (3rd) is not functioning correctly. Replaced MAF (4th and current) sensor 3 months later, and I had to battle for the Subaru dealer to honor warranty and replace the part. Has behaved perfectly for many months, until early January 2020. I'm now back to same problem of stalling. Bandaid fix for now is that the MAF sensor is unplugged, with the plug-in covered and taped for protection. Engine light stays on, cruise control is disengaged, some occasional hesitation, but doesn't stall - much safer for now. We've got new fuel injectors to put in, hoping this is the fix.
