After trying to figure out why the car wouldn't shift out of first gear, it was finally determined it was the entire brake system. It was originally thought to be the transmission but after ruling that out, the car sat in the shop for ages until they were able to diagnosis the issue. When switching the car to manual, you could shift out of gear and that was the most confusing part trying to figure out why it wouldn't shift in automatic.
