3/17/2023 So went to move car to plow driveway, started car as soon as I moved steering wheel it twitched and was almost impossible to turn, Red EPS dash lite came on. (EPS= Electric Power Steering). Shut engine off, swore a few expletives and restarted car, same scenario. Called closest dealer explained issue, told me to bring it in.
Decided since steering was all but impossible I’ll have a ramp truck bring it. Ramp truck arrived and low and behold steering worked, cancelled ramp truck (friend) so no cost. Drove to dealer, service dept. diagnosed bad EPS, Had it repaired $2585.96.
3/17/2023 started car to run errands and steering failed again Red EPS light on again.
Had it ramped to dealer they paid. Service diagnosed Failed UCU, Subaru covered this repair because original EPS caused electrical damage to ECU.
Issue I have is this steering failure would be covered if the EPS was cracked in certain locations as per Subaru Service Bulletin 04-27-21R dated 07/27/21, revised 07/28/2021 which basically states that corrosion May develop on EPS and if car where to hit pothole or similar road hazard EPS could crack. My car never hit a pothole or other hazard and was not cracked. It also states that if this where to happen “there will NOT be a complete loss of steering, it would result in an uneven feel when turning left or rightâ€.
If my wife had been driving, she’s 63, she would not have been able to force the steering wheel. I will be contesting the non coverage by warranty with Subaru of America.
If this happens to anyone, don’t drive the car it can happen when you least expect it, luckily for me it happened in my driveway both times.
