problem #1

Dec 202013

Legacy Outback Wagon 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 150,000 miles

Belt idler bearing must have failed, it wore a hole through the plastic cover and fell out of my car on the highway. Timing belt loosened up and caused bent/broken valves. Cheaper to replace engine at the shop than having the engine tore down and fixed. Timing belt & water pump were replaced at ~123,000 miles when the head gaskets were replaced.

Update from Dec 31, 2013: Belt idler bearing must have failed, it wore a hole through the plastic cover and fell out of my car on the highway. Timing belt loosened up and caused bent/broken valves. Cheaper to replace engine at the shop than having the engine tore down and fixed. Timing belt & water pump were replaced at ~123,000 miles when the head gaskets were replaced. MAKE SURE TO REPLACE THE IDLERS AND TENSIONER WHEN BELT IS REPLACED! Wish I would have.
