It started as an occasional problem. It is now significant. Had transmission drained and refilled. Mechanic said the seals are probably "going". Additive put in and it helped alot for about 6 months. Now I am getting stuck in neutral. Cars honk at me and think I am an idiot. When it finally goes into gear (run the shifter through all the grears a few times) and it finally gets me into drive or reverse, the car surges forward as it shifts into the end of the "reving".
I am not driving it for now. Getting a quote for a new transmission or considering buying another car. Not sure if I trust Subaru! Only 127,000 miles and the transmission has a major fault. My husband found a site that said this "was a common problem"; the biggest problem with 5 years of cars from Subaru. Subaru should give a free fix. FIVE YEARS of cars.
