The 2.5L used in all of the Subarus and some Toyota's up to 2009 has had this problem. I buy Subarus know the issue exist and prepared to fix them or use them as burner cars. I am a loyal Subaru fan, just wish the issues were resolved by Subaru earlier on.

Sitting at a stoplight during the winter, after owning the car for one month, and steam began pouring out from under the hood.

I called Subaru who told me to drive it home and then drive it to the dealer the next day. I took it in, pulled in at the service bay, as the steam rolled. They knew exactly what the problem was. Subaru had the car for a week rebuilding the engine and provided a rental. The car was fine after the repair.

Legacy L 2.5L

I purchased this car new in 2003 and had to have the head gaskets replaced by the dealer (for $1800) in August 2009 with only 47,855 miles on the odometer. In November 2012 the same dealer said the head gaskets needed to be replaced again after only 16,197 additional miles. The car had been serviced regularly by the dealer.

No more Subaru's for me!
