Engine always starts, then while driving at any speed above 30mph, will stall at almost exactly 8 minutes out. Up to the stall point, the engine has power and runs smoothly. It will die even at high speed. The engine can be restarted after about 10 seconds and driven all day without problem.
If you start the car from cold and drive it slowly for the first 8 minutes, the engine will not fail. If the car is started warm instead of cold, the car also will not fail. The pattern is always the same.
The problem started in 1998, but occurred only once a month or so. It gradually became more frequent until 2003 when it became routine.
The car has been back to the dealer many times since the problem began. The crankshaft position sensor was the first thing replaced. All repairs since have focused on the intake manifold and the numbers 3 & 4 cylinders. No fixes improved the problem.
Subaru America denies that they have ever had such a problem reported. The dealer service writer has told me Subaru "limits" them in what they can do as a remedy. We have not been able to sell the car in good conscience because of the problem.
