problem #1

Oct 102013

Outback Legacy / AWD 2.5L V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 210,000 miles

With 210,000 miles the Subaru Dealer wants me to put a $4800 Transmission to fix the problem. The problem with low pressure from a clogged filter seems to help a little. The big problem is the fluid smells "burnt," but I am afraid to replace with new. With new Tranny Fluid, the detergents / additives will start breaking the carbon deposits apart inside the transmission and then I will have that much more small metal particles going through the clutch packs, valve body, etc... I have seen this from friends to many times where the Tranny Fluid gets changed - normally recommended from Dealer or Quick Oil Change Business - and within 8 - 9 months the transmission is completely ruined.

I am thinking about / or going to try and replace the Filter Monthly (which is external) and instead of using new fluid in the new filter, maybe using an Auto Tranny Additive that helps with smoother / easier shifting. My Trans is not leaking and the Subaru is in pretty good shape for a 2000; but has 210K miles. The transmission shifts in and out of Park and Reverse with no problems; however not wanting to shift into drive especially when the engine is warmed up or the outside air temp is above 70'F. I have sat, waited, given a little gas, or other tricks and is beyond getting me mad. Anyone out there maybe have other ideas or some special trick to keep me from wanting to blow this damn car up in a million pieces? Thank you, TwinsCreek.
