I bought this Subaru in 2012 with 44k miles and had it inspected by the Subaru dealer. No problems were reported. The previous owner's records showed he changed the oil every 3k miles using synthetic oil. I changed the oil every 5k miles again with synthetic oil. My wife returned from a 250 mile trip. I had checked the oil level the day before and day of her departure. During the trip the Surbaru developed what i though was a rattle and I took it to our mechanic, a very experienced Subaru mechanic. I was devastated when the rattle was really piston slap and there was less than one quart of oil in the engine. I was told that this is not an uncommon problem for 2008 Outbacks duej to badly sized pistons. I had the engine rebuilt at a cost of $3700.
