My wife and I are in our 70's, so we don't have kids screwing up our car or leaving things under the seats to get jammed in the mechanisms underneath. We drive sensibly and baby our two Subaru's, 1 (this car) is a 2010 Outback, the other is a 2008 Legacy. We love our cars!
Recently, the electrically operated passenger seat on the Outback would not go forward or backwards. If you used the power button the seat would try to TWIST in the rails it rides on and was jammed. We brought it to our Subaru Dealer for check and repair. We were told "the electrical cable has SNAPPED" .. after paying $127.45 for the inspection, and balking at the repair price quoted of $1,450 to fix it, I was told by my repair technician at Subaru, that "I should call Subaru of America to see what they could do to get the cost reduced."
I called and was told by someone named Art, "Since your warranty is over, as a goodwill gesture, I can get the cost down to 1/2 if you agree to pay the remainder of $750" [my tech at Subaru told me the inspection cost was included in the total amount] .. I still felt that the cable was something that should work for the life of the car and the part should have been paid for by Subaru, but had to give in so we could get the car in safe working order and so my wife could use the seat again! I ended up paying the initial $127.45, plus another $698 (over $850 with tax added, to complete my end of the deal. So it wasn't exactly 1/2 .. but it is fixed now.
I am not happy with this "Bargain" .. I didn't mind paying for the Labor, but felt this cable should have worked for the life of the car and been covered by Subaru! There was NOTHING found under the seat to cause the electrical cable to "SNAP".
