Outback Premium 3.6L

Went to run errands started up the auto, engine oil light came on. shut engine off. pulled the dipstick wiped it reinsert it and pull out again. No oil present on dip stick. add 1 quart of oil wait check dip stick again oil just on tip of dipstick. Take it to the dealer they do an oil change and tell me they will monitor (oil test). I believe I am on the 2nd oil test (warranty has expired since the report) The light came on again, this time it was 300+ miles short of oil change. Back to the dealers without adding oil. The auto is on a slight grade in favor of dipstick. Dealer checks the stick says even though there is oil present on the stick I should be able to go the next 300 miles then another test.

This is the twelfth new vehicle I have owned, third Subaru. I have put on some hard miles in my youth, used to love drag racing now old and gray more moderate driver, all that said mu last Subaru a 2000 Forester had 120,000 miles and barely used any oil. Like this one all highway miles. I believe either the wiper ring, valve guide or seals have premature wear.

Subaru is insisting that this oil consumption is normal and not to be feared. In the 60's if you burned a quart of oil it was considered an oil burner but with todays metallurgical properties this is extraordinary. Before retirement twenty years ago I worked as an engineer and was what they used to call a motor-head. Always been a lover of cars. I believe the dealership is blowing smoke up my ass with this lame excuse.

How many quarts will I burn when I hit 100,000 2 quarts between oil changes? I bought the 6 cylinder so as not to work the 4 cylinder as hard on long trips. This is either a poor design (thin rings to reduce the friction) or a lemon.
