This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Subaru dealer.
Car started to hesitate when I tried to accelerate from a stop or when slowing down and then needing to accelerate. Problem was intermittent but happened more often when first driving in morning. The hesitation wasn't just for a moment but 3, 4 or 5 seconds before the acceleration would kick in. Very scary and could have easily caused a major accident.
Took to Subaru dealer in Elk Grove and they offered to drive the car home and see if they could duplicate the problem the next day since the problem was intermittent and happened more often when first driving in the morning. The service rep was able to duplicate the problem the following morning and then the Subaru mechanic technician was able to duplicate problem again the following day.
After several weeks Subaru sent them a valve body. My understanding is that it is the brains of the transmission. They replaced the valve body, tested car the next morning and called to say it was fixed. I have only had car back for two days but so far so good. Very grateful Subaru dealer believed me and took the time to drive it under same condition.

Problem occurred with a Subaru-rebuilt transmission with just less than 100k miles. (Original transmission was replaced because Subaru tech cracked oil crankcase over tightening drain plug.) Only service and work (except tires) has been a Subaru dealer. Took to dealer because car acted just like an automatic with hard shifting although it’s a CVT. Dealer could reproduce, but not determine reason. Said drive until Check Engine light comes on then bring back. Light has never come on. I called Subaru about extended warranty and was told the expired in 2018.
Like many owners I have never had a transmission failure in any car I’ve owned much less one with <100k miles. (I have a 2002 Toyota Highlander with 170k miles.) other than the transmission and excessive oil consumption 1/2 qt/1-2k miles) the car is in great shape, inside and out. Dealer will not rebuild or repair transmission. Says it cannot get rebuilt transmission from Subaru or anyone else just from totaled car auction. Dealership is offering $2500 trade in. I guess Subaru is expecting this to be lost in all the other problems of the word. There are class-action lawsuits for cellphone battery fraud but nothing about this. I guess there is not enough money in it for the lawyers.
