Outback 2.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 43,850 miles

Just so anyone interested knows this problem still exits... I was driving my 2017 2.5L OB recently when the gas light came on (at 1/4 tank). At 60 miles remaining, and 1/8 on the gas gauge, the car lost power and the engine shut down. All restart attempts failed. After roadside assistance arrived and provided 1 gallon of gas, the car started without any problems and I drove 12 miles to the nearest gas station. I added another 15.5 gallons and the automatic pump shut-off triggered. For those keeping track, this means between 16.0 and 16.5 gallons total was added to an 18.5 gallon tank. This suggests that there was 2-2.5 gallons of fuel in the tank that was unusable.

The dealer was unable/unwilling to troubleshoot and Subaru America claimed no knowledge of this ever happening before. This car had the fuel indication recall done earlier this summer. The MPG on the control cluster is reliable based on miles vs. gallons added at fill, and the miles remaining would be accurate if the full 18.5 gallons in the tank were available, so it seems like this is a physical/mechanical problem and not a computer issue (at least post recall...). It is disappointing to see that other owners have experienced this problem almost a year ago and there appears not to be a resolution.
