On a trip in August from Texas to Colorado the steering of the vehicle was extremely difficult to control going around curves and passing or being next to vehicles. During these conditions, the vehicle would for no reason jerk one way or the other. If you were no holding onto the steering wheel, it presented a dangerous situation. It was even worse at higher speeds.

Upon our return to Texas, we took the vehicle into the dealer to explain the problem we were having. After they took the vehicle for a test drive, the technician experienced the problem we were having. The fix was to turn off the lane assist function which fixed the steering issue. I would suggest Subaru Dealers should make buyers aware of this function and I would also suggest that Subaru remove that function as it can be dangerous.

At 2 o'clock in the afternoon, I was driving at a regular speed of about 50 to 60 km an hour, on a snow covered road with some icy spots here and there. No cruise control was activated. We were five aboard. Suddenly, the vehicle skidded to the left and went perpendicular to the opposite way, before I was able to regain control and go back on my lane. I had not braked nor tried to change lanes when it happened; I was just going straight ahead.

Fortunately, no car was coming the other way, otherwise there would have been a major car crash. I am not sure what happened, if the steering turned to the left or if the car decided by itself to turn as if one or two wheels had blocked or lost grip. I was under some shock, as that had never happened in my life with front wheel driven cars or 4 X 4s, and because Subaru Outbacks are supposed to be very stable in such circumstances. I had the vehicle checked in the garage but nothing was found. So I don't know what caused the problem and I am curious to see if other people experienced the same kind of incident.
