At least 10 times since the first time about a year and a half ago, the car would not wake up from sleep mode and I repeatedly missed meetings because my brand new, very expensive, very technologically advanced Tesla Model Y was broken down in my garage.
I’d sit there and press-and-hold the brake pedal + both scroll wheels for 10 seconds+ which is supposed to hard-reset the system but that wouldn’t help either. The screen would stay black but the car’s lights and sounds would turn on, but I couldn’t shift or drive. Every time, it would take at least 15-20 minutes for the car to finally connect to Tesla’s servers to authenticate that it’s me, then the screen would light up and start to work properly
I ended up noticing that the key indicator was if I unlocked the car by opening the Tesla app instead of the key card, the car’s status in the top left corner would just spin and never connect. That’s when I knew I was about to be late.
I eventually had to go out and buy a cheap ICE car because it reliably started every time, whenever I wanted.
It happens much less frequently now but still at least once every few months, which is still unacceptable. No vehicle shouldn’t frequently be unusable for 15-20 minutes, much less one that’s supposedly technologically superior, and also very expensive. I’ve also now gotten into the habit of setting a reminder every morning 20+ mins before I have to leave for the gym so that, if the car can’t immediately connect and wake up, it can do whatever it does to eventually connect by the time I have to leave.
Cannot wait for the lease to be up and get an EV from a traditional manufacturer now. There have been so many better vehicles released since I got the MY. If you want an EV to use relatively locally, get something other than a Tesla. The ONLY benefit of a Tesla is its proprietary supercharger network. Everything else about other vehicles is better.
