I hardly driving this truck. Therefore, I did not realize this issue until 11 years later. This morning, Engine light suddenly went on. I checked it with an ODB II tool. It showed 2 error codes, P1442, Power train, and P2441, Power Train Secondary Air Injection System Switch Valve Stuck Closed Bank 1.
I googled about this issue and learned Toyota did not have any recall on 2005 4Runner but Tundra and Sequoia on 2007 and above. The cost of fix is between $2,000 to $4,000!

Toyota fixed or reimbursed Sequoia and Tundra owners for the same problem. They should do the same for the V8 Runner owners. It's the same engine with the same problem, they just claim they didn't have enough complaints, well, there weren't as many Runners made with the V8 as there were Sequoias and Tundras. So I want to be reimbursed my 2300.00 bucks! Plus whatever it is going to cost for them to check it out again because it still makes the same noise after the dealership replaced it, it's just not as bad.

Same issue as Ricky T. above. Appears to be a common problem with the V8 engine although warranty extensions were not granted to the 4Runner, they were for the Sequoia and Tundra with the same engine.
An obvious design flaw that allows the pump to ingest contaminants and self destruct. On top of that, the pump was placed under the intake manifold creating difficulty and extra cost to access.

The air injection pump went out on my 05 SE 4Runner 2WD at a cost of $3,200.00 to fix. This is a known issue with regards to this specific 4.7L V8 engine 2UZ-FE as it was shared, at the time, with the Tundra & Sequoia. Tundra/Sequoia owners experienced the same issue and made enough noise that Toyota offered to extend the warranty to cover the repair/replacement cost. If the owner already repaired his vehicle, Toyota would reimburse the repair cost as long as proof of repair was provided. Since my problem happened at approximately 95k miles, it is not covered by the warranty and thus I'm out $3200.00 until Toyota decides to extend the same privileges to 4Runner owners.

Just as many other 4Runner, GX460, Sequoia, and Tundra owners, my 4Runner has the dreaded secondary air injection system failure codes P2445 and P0418 which dealers quote 3-4k to fix. Toyota fixed this problem on some Tundra's under warranty but will not do the same for 4Runners.
