Occurred at approximately 70k miles. Vehicle began to run rough and a series of idiot lights came on. Off-white smoke began emanating from the tail pipe. The dip stick revealed heavy oil consumption for a relatively short drive. The shop confirmed the terrible news - seals for the pistons had failed and the engine was burning copious amounts of oil. Replacement of the engine and catalytic converters was required due to the damage caused from oil burning. Bought a 4runner as it had a much vaunted reputation for reliability. Somewhere the firm Murphy and Mayhem had a good chortle.
