Avalon Limited V6

Called Toyota and they claim they sent out 2 notices to me that there was an extended warranty, and that this was a manufacturer defect. The extended period is past its deadline and they can no longer compensate, or pay to have it replaced. They are not being honest - I never received any notice from Toyota. I am very diligent with the maintenance of this car. I would not have ignored two notices. They said there is nothing they can do for me. I am not giving up!!!

I contacted Toyota and was told it's a known issue but the window to get repaired had expired. I never received a notice that I could get this repaired. The representative said there was nothing they could do. This is poor customer service. This is my 83 year old widowed mothers car who lives on a fixed income. She can't afford to pay 1500 dollars for this repair. This is unacceptable!!

My car has always been kept in the garage, except for being at work. I have cracks all over the passengers side airbags. I was in the hospital getting a lung transplant when the extended service letter came out offering to replace it. I didn't drive for two years because of illness. When I went to the Toyota dealer he said I missed the deadline by a week. He said he had the parts and would like to do it but would need an ok from Toyota corporate. I called Toyota and they said there is nothing they can do. If there is a class action lawsuit on this I would like to join…..I did nothing to cause this, it is a manufacturer defect and a safety hazard. If the airbags deploy, it could kill someone.

I had gone to the dealer and contacted toyota dealer. He said that the part was not available to be replaced and toyota wrote back to wait for the notice. Never received anything from the dealer or toyota. Have been back to Toyota and they never mentioned anything on fixing the same. I tried to submit email from toyota site with pictures but the email won't go through as they are asking to fill state field and that option cannot be filled as there is no drop down for state nor can you type it on that field.

Update from Jan 25, 2017: My issue has been resolved, dealer replaced the part for me this time I went to them.

Toyota supposedly ordered and procured the replacement last year - but they neglected to call owner, so they say they returned to dashboard to the parts warehouse. Checked on it in late 2015 and they revealed this surprise, and said they would have to start all over again, and it would take 3-6 months for the new dash to come in. Today I called Toyota and they said it might be a year and a half because of the backlog.

So, Toyota can produce cars by the millions in plants worldwide, but they a) can't pick up the phone to let me know the replacement is in (which I doubt happened anyway), and b) can't get to my order for a year and a half, and c) act like I'm stupid every three months when I call for a status.

Having worked for the distributor, I know that just the distributor (Southeast Toyota) makes from a few thousand to over ten thousand for every car the dealer sells. For instance, I ordered a 2001 Sienna XLE when I worked there, and the sticker price was $47,000, but I paid only $32,000 - that's a lot. Toyota makes a fortune off of consumers, and they used to have a great product.

I've have more than 10 new Toyotas, but now only buy Hondas and Acuras. They are much better cars and the service is much, much better. It is sad that I had to reduce the price of my 2008 Solara because of a cheap crappy dashboard, but I am not selling my 2006 Avalon - even if it has been in the garage all of its life.

Which brings me to the point: the sun didn't ruin this dashboard - Toyota did. Car's been in the share since new, and only has 30k miles on it. Toyota's dragging their feet at my expense. A year and a half or 18 months is obscene for a recall.

I purchased my 3rd Camry Avalon in 2013. I still have the 2006 with only 36,000 miles and the dash is cracking all over the top, front and sides. I also have another 2006 Avalon with the same problem. The second one is in my company name.

I have received the first recall notice but nothing on the second recall that should have been issued in May. Can anyone tell me the status of this. Toyota will not answer my emails or calls. The local dealer is no help either as they say it is up to Toyota. In other words I am getting the put off and run around.

I want to trade this one for a new 2015 Camry but cannot trade until the dash is fixed.

Avalon XLS 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 81,663 miles

It has been interesting following the complaints about the cracks in the 2006 Toyota Avalon dash. I am right in middle of purchasing a used 2006 Toyota Avalon in Hawaii (a hot weather state) with 81,663 miles on it. I own a 2002 Toyota Avalon in Washington state that shows no signs of cracks in the dash. I was hugely disappointed about the cracks near the Airbag on the dash of this vehicle I have put a deposit on to buy. Their are 3 to 4 cracks at this point, but not very large at only 2-3 inches in length. I figured that was the extent of it, but am concerned now to read in the internet about the cracking problem being a major problem with Toyota dashes from those years with cracks traveling many feet across the dash.

Technically I am now an owner since I did sign a purchase contract, but could back out I guess at the peril of a $500 deposit. The used car dealer readily lowered their list price during negotiation, and now I understand better - why. Though they did say several brands including Toyota and Lexus models from their experience had the exact same problem for about three years around 2006. I may proceed anyway because I know it is a reliable car with good mileage, and I am not paying a high new car list price like so many disappointed Toyota Avalon owners have as new car buyers when they purchased. The dealer offered to pay for a custom carpet to be installed on the dash to hide the problem.

Pretty much what I'm reading is Toyota car owners, Toyota dealers, used car dealers, and probably body shops, are all genuinely aware of the cracking problem, and the model years effected. Cleverly Toyota is pretending to be unaware of the problem issuing written litigious responses to customers. You have to conclude that since the problem did go away after 3 years, they are so aware they cured the problem. Most likely they assigned an internal task force and investigated the problem. Most like heads rolled as a result of what they discovered. The cracking problem was resolved in later year models.

Toyota is just being cheap in the face of losing loyal customers, calculating the cost of losing those customers forever is far less than announcing a recall for the known problem. Replacing an entire dash for $2,000 is quite different than acknowledging a recall to add a few five cent screws to cure a known problem. Unfortunately, only one dash air bag that does not deploy properly as a result of the cracks will likely result in a personal injury settlement by Toyota that makes the cost of a recall pale by comparison.

I HAVE HAD THIS CAR FOR SEVERAL YEARS I BOUGHT IT USED AND LOVE THE WAY IT DRIVES. BUT NOW THE DASHBOARD IS CRACKING REAL BAD. I AM AFRAID THAT IT WILL COMPROMISE THE AIR BAG IN THE FRONT.

WE ARE TOYOTA PEOPLE AND ALWAYS HAVE HAD TOYOTA AS A RELIABLE CAR. BUT NOW I WILL LOOK FOR AN OTHER BRAND.

TOYOTA WILL AT THE MOMENT NOT STAND BEHIND THIS PROBLEM.

I WAS TOLD THAT THE TRADE IN VALUE WILL BE $2200 LESS IF I TRADED IT IN. THE CAR HAS 72000 MILES AND IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, MINUS THE DASHBOARD.

I bought my beautiful Avalon Limited for a lot of money, bought an extended warranty for 100,000 miles. Runs great but my dashboard started to crack 2 years later. I have taken my Avalon ( one of 3 Toyotas I own ) and was told that it was not covered by the warranty???

I complained to my local dealer many times and finally they came up that I would have to pay a discount rate of only $1,000. Which I refused since it was still too much & not at fault. Many years later, still have my Avalon, love the car, hate the cracks.

Toyota should fix these dashboards due to their negligence for not testing their materials properly.

Avalon XLS V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 37,000 miles

I have fallen into the category of the Toyota/Lexus 06-09 Cracked Dash problems. My Toyota Avalon XLS dash started cracking on July 5, 2012. The car had 37000 miles on it then. Since then to date June 14, 1014, the dash has cracked all the way under the Glove box door up the side of the radio door panel and down almost the length of the radio door panel. The Toyota dealer wanted $2400.00 to replace the dash, this was their recommended fix. I wonder is anyone has tried to trade a car in with this anomaly. My next car will not be a Toyota that is for sure.

The dashboard has cracks similar to a road map all over it on the top 2 pieces of dashboard. This car has been garaged since it was new, so sun exposure has not been a factor. We have reported it to Toyota, but no response. They did offer one piece of advice:: pay $1200. for the 2 pieces that need to be replaced. If I left it out in the sun, I could understand it, but being garaged 90% of its life, I do not envision how the cracks could have manifested themselves.

I have a 2006 Toyota Avalon that at the time of the problem probably just had 35000-40000 miles. I took it to the local Toyota dealer and they told me that my cracked dashboard was not covered under the extended warranty that I had gotten at time of the purchase of the vehicle. They would replace my dashboard for $385.00 and could not guarantee that if any damage was done to the vehicle(dashboard) at time of repairs it would be at my own expense. Here it is a vehicle that I would take care keeping it In our garage. We use to have three Toyota vehicles in our household and we now down to one, my Avalon. I Won't ever buy a Toyota ever again.

I have owned this car since it was new. I have always maintained in the hopes of keeping it for a long time. I originally leased the Avalon and loved it so much, I bought it at the end of the lease. This is my 13th Toyota.

Around 70,000 miles, the dashboard started cracking and has progressively gotten worse. I have contacted Toyota but no response as of yet. I know that because of this issue, the value has gone down and I am not happy about that. I have read many complaints about this same issue and in fact at a local dealer, one of the guys in the detailing shop even told me it was a known issue and nothing has ever been done about it. This is very disappointing especially with all of the bad press Toyota has gotten in recent years.

If anyone has gotten any results, please post your comments. My email is: siegs.scott@gmail.com if you would like to contact me.

Avalon Limted V6

  • 87,000 miles

Contacted Toyota.com: I was just at our local dealer and spoke with them concerning the NUMEROUS complaints of dashboard cracks for our 2006 Avalon. This seems to be a MAJOR problem for these years and seems to be mostly held to the Avalon. Now with that being said, we have just purchased our Avalon from our local dealer and right after this noticed some significant cracks forming around and ON the passenger airbag. This concerns me and my family, especially for safety....I'm asking for Toyota to do something about this, as our local dealer stated that Toyota has helped customers in the past with this very problem. Seeing how it is WIDELY known all over the internet (BBB as well) of the thousands of complaints, we ask once again to please take action on our part to fix this issue. It will absolutely make a difference in the future if we purchase another Toyota or not. We appreciate your time and effort on this.

Response from Toyota: Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

We are sorry to hear of the concerns you are experiencing with your 2006 Toyota Avalon regarding the dashboard cracks.

Please allow us an opportunity to further research your concerns by providing us with the full, 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for the 2006 Toyota Avalon.

Additionally, if you could please provide your contact information (phone number and address); as we were unable to locate your vehicle within our database with the information provided and would like the opportunity to update our database accordingly.

We are unable to weigh the legitimacy of the information found during your online research, as the details of the individual concerns are not known to us. For that reason we encourage customers to contact our office regarding your Toyota vehicle, sales, or service experience so that it can be fully addressed, and any trends identified.

Response Back to Toyota: Thank you for reaching out to us....Our VIN #4T1BK36B76U133266....Contact information is; Desiree or Timothy Bedell....Cell # 352-303-9559.....Address 13383 SE 102nd Ct Belleview, Fl 34420

I'm having trouble believing your statement of, "We are unable to weigh the legitimacy of the information found during your online research." The reason I have trouble believing this is, we have been in contact with our local Toyota dealer and they corroborated the fact that this is a MAJOR issue, especially in this model and years of this vehicle. Even telling us that Toyota has replaced (at the expense of Toyota) some dashboards for their customers recently. With that being said I will provide just a couple of the MANY URL's for which there are many complaints. Here are a couple URL's of the numerous complaints: Dashboard Cracks - This one even on your own forum website!!! More Dashboard Cracks

I have submitted another contact us form through Toyota.com in hopes of being able to get this resolved amicably. Please help us to replace this dashboard. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Final Response from Toyota: Thank you for responding to our previous email and providing us with the requested information.

According to your Vehicle Identification Number, 4T1BK36B76U133266, there are no known issues or current recalls relating to dashboard for your 2006 Toyota Avalon. The warranty on the dashboard is 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first from the date of first use. Our records indicate your vehicle's date of first use is 03/25/2006.

Since your vehicle is outside of the warranty parameters based on time and mileage, Toyota is unwilling to offer any assistance for the dashboard repair.

Please be aware the information you have provided is used in combination with warranty claims and other customer contacts to track trends with our vehicles. If in the future a Special Service Campaign (SSC)/recall or warranty enhancement is issued that would cover your specific issue, and you have already made repairs to the vehicle, Toyota would review your repairs for reimbursement at that time.

We again apologize for the situation you encountered with your 2006 Toyota Avalon, and we are sorry for any inconvenience or expense you may incur.

Still moving on with this to other places that may be willing to help....Keep you posted

I just bought a 2006 Toyota Avalon XLS earlier this year with only 30,030 miles on it. I bought the car from Florida and had it shipped to Ohio. The car is in excellent condition and obviously cared for well. The problem is every since I bought the car the dash board has started to crack in many different places. I paid a good price for this car because it was such low on miles and in great condition but since I purchased it over this summer and fall the dash has cracked in many places. Does anyone have any suggestions what to do. I checked with a dealer they want $ 2000 to fix the problem and I refuse to pay that.
