The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Avalon. The contact stated the electronic stability control goes out on hills and leaves the vehicle stranded. The contact stated it shuts the vehicle down and they have to back down and avoid hills when driving the vehicle. The contact states this only happens when the vehicle has to be stopped when going up a hill. The engine will run fine when placed in neutral or reverse, but the engine shuts down when in drive. The dealer stated this is a feature of the vehicle and there is no repair for the failure. The failure mileage was 1,200 and the current mileage was 25,900. The consumer stated he was unable to navigate slippery roads. When the system detected slippage, he lost acceleration and was not able to move. Updated evoq 06/16/11

The traction control system in our 2006 Toyota Avalon will not allow the car to drive in snow. Once a wheel starts to slip the brake is applied and the car will not move. As we live in Colorado this is a serious problem.

Sept. 27, 2009, I was driving my 2006 Toyota Avalon into my garage at a slow speed. When I hit the brake, the car accelerated causing me to drive into the workbench, braking it and some wallboard behind it as well as damaging the car before the car finally came to a stop.

Problems with 20006 Toyota Avalon: On numerous occasions, the car has accelerated spontaneously and the brakes have not stopped the car when the brake pedal was depressed. Luckily, no accidents yet. Recent problems with engine malfunction and vehicle stability control malfunction. Toyota dealer denied any problems, except for "spark plugs" and oil line defect. Dealer denied car was on recall list. Complained that I was never notified about the mat, gas pedal or other recall. Dealer denied that car was on recall list. Dealer charged $1,100 (4 tires included) for work. Ongoing problem since car was purchased: Gas cap is difficult to replace after fill-up. Check engine light comes on if cap is not "clicked" several times. Car must be taken to dealer to be turned off. It will not go off even if gas cap is on properly. Dealer charged $135 for each time.

I own a 2006 Toyota Avalon..light came on today (vsc) did not know what it was until driving on the freeway going 65 mph and all of a sudden my vehicle lost power and engine still idling...pulled to the side of the road, very dangerous, no shoulder. I shut the car down and restarted it...gave it a little gas and thought I could exit the freeway..as I gave it gas trying to merge back into the slow lane with 65mph traffic..it nearly caused a rear in collision with another vehicle.. my car cut out and then it went up to 50mph (cutting out the entire time)..enough to get me off the freeway. Taking it to the dealer in the morning. Whatever the problem with the vsc...will be determined in the morning at the Toyota dealer. Very dangerous.

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Avalon. While driving approximately 10 mph on a snow packed incline, the traction control system (tcs) activated voluntary. There was no response when the accelerator pedal was depressed. The failure occurs whenever the vehicle is proceeding up an incline on snow cover road surfaces. The authorized dealer stated that the traction control system was a manufacturer design, however, some vehicles are equipped with a mechanism that disengages the tcs. The failure mileage was 68,000 and current mileage was 69,000. Updated 2/23/09 when the consumer attempted to drive up a slight incline in snow, the drive wheel slipped which engage the tcs. The drive wheel was unable to regain traction which would have disengaged the tcs. The vehicle eventually came to a stop sliding backwards. There was no way to manualy disengage the tcs. If the tcs could be disengaged the vehicle could be handled more easily. Updated 02/27/09.
