problem #2

Avalon XLS V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 3,000 miles

In May, 2012, I noticed the left side lever of the steering column had loosened causing me to swerve while driving because of the suddenness of the problem. Took it back to the dealer; they couldn't find any problem. On 01/07/13 while driving I was making a turn and the steering wheel collapsed causing me to swerve in the next driving lane, but not causing an accident. Took back the 2011 Avalon again to the same dealer, and as the mechanic began testing/shaking the steering wheel, the left clamp lock began moving down to its lowest level. This morning the dealer replaced the entire steering column and notified me that there was a "Technical Service Bulletin" announced by Toyota because of this exact problem. It's certainly worth being adamant to the dealership to fix what can be a potential accident-prone problem!

Avalon Limited 3.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 10,000 miles

My steering wheel telescoping lock would loosen every day and eventually come unlocked on me when I would brake and slide all the way in. A major safety issue. Toyota replaced the column with an updated version.
