One day the trunk lid would not stay closed after releasing it open, using the remote key fob 'trunk open' button. Had to tie down the trunk lid with rope; definitely a problem being out on the road at the time, away from home.
Later upon inspection, found the electric release mechanism inside the latch assembly on the lid was stuck in the open position. I fiddled with it, even dismantled it trying to get it to reset normally after being electrically operated - all to no avail. Only way to use trunk normally was to disconnect electric connector to the assembly (disabling the electric release function). It still works normally using the key, the mechanical cable release connected to lever near the drivers seat (and by the emergency release handle next to the latch assembly).
A new assembly was quoted by dealer here in Ontario Canada at $383.
I recently came across another person in my neighbourhood experiencing the same issue on their Corolla. The dealer Service Advisor says their mechanics have tried to fix about 10 of these assemblies with out success.
