Camry XLE 3.2L

Always checking the oil- when it was bone dry in the beginning in between oil changes. The oil light NEVER came on. It barely flickered once in all the 8 years I've owned my car!

Camry LE 4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 60,000 miles

About 50-60 K mile mark I noticed that the oil pressure light was coming on in-between oil changes that I did religiously on time. Started monitoring the oil consumption since. It has progressively gotten worse. Burn about a quart every 700 to 800 miles now. After all these years just received an extended warranty from Toyota relating to this. Gives me reason to breath better, however this doesn't come without a test.

Wonder what surprises they have in their bag for this. Will update as I find out.

Had dealer check oil consumption today after driving 12000 miles. Car failed so Toyota needs to fix the issue under special warranty. No idea when it will be. Fixed they said.

Camry LE 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 65,000 miles

I bought the 2207 Toyota Camry from dealer direct as new always hand washed pampered like my child, done all the services with extreme vigilant care. Have horrible engine oil burning since 2012, often 1.5 gallon every 5000 miles service. Engine is also making some rattling sound like is coming from water pump. Now it is only 94000 miles. So I am 150% confident that Toyota has used some thing wrong with this engine during manufacturing

Now I got a letter from Toyota regarding this. But I am not sure whether they will solve this, because it is clearly written in the service book that engine oil consumption up to 1.2 gallon is normal. I will update.

I have noticed the excessive engine oil consumption since 2012, when the vehicle was driven about 75,000 miles. I've learned from Toyota dealership that this was "normal", and I had to keep adding oil to avoid burned out. Now I have to add almost 2 qtrs of oil for every 1000 miles... Never ever had such problem with any other vehicles.

Camry CE 4 cyl

  • 136,000 miles

Took my 2007 Toyota Camry to the dealership today after starting the oil consumption test last month. I took it in with 1210 miles on the test. The car has been burning at least 2 - 3 qts of oil between 3,000 mile oil changes for over 2 years now. I took it to an independent garage in December, 2014, and they told me it was definitely burning oil & had bad piston rings. They said it was a problem in this year for the Camry. They also said there were several class action lawsuits against Toyota.

When I called the Toyota Dealership last month regarding the oil consumption warranty extension that I received from Toyota, the guy told me it was normal for older cars to burn oil. Really ?? 2-3 qts??? I was using synthetic oil! (I had a 1997 Camry that had 160,000 miles on it before I sold it, and it never burned one drop of oil!) Anyway, I took my car back this morning as we had reached our test mileage and they called to tell me it wasn't burning ANY oil. I am SHOCKED! Toyota issued an extension to the warranty knowing these piston rings are faulty! How can they be good on some 2007 models and bad on others when it's the Same piston rings. You have a test done with their oil and yet, it doesn't burn ANY after it's been burning oil for 2 yrs.

How can you trust the dealer to do the test: 1) You didn't see if they added any oil when they took the Tape off, 2) How does the customer know if they put in any additives to the oil when you began the test?, & 3) Why did they not look at the exhaust, which is gunked with oil residue??? This fix will cost Toyota a LOT of money, so they DON"T want to fix your problem. The oil consumption needs to be the full 3,000 miles, or at least to 2,500 miles. That's the true test. Why can't the customer watch them put the oil in the car before they put the tape/seal on all the access areas to the oil and why can't we see the technician check the oil when your return the car??? With the history of this car burning oil, I have to wonder what kind of additive or oil they are using for this test. Maybe they need to let everyone know so we can get that oil! Apparently it works for them.

Camry LE 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 60,000 miles

I bought my 2007 Camry in 2009 with 23k only. I was driving it about 10K every year only. In late 2012 I noticed the car was burning engine oil but no leak shows under the car. Last year a white/purple smoke smoke was coming out of the exhaust plus burning more oil and mileage around 72k. I took it to mechanic and problem was piston ring and cost to fix 2.8k. Toyota never admitted bad design and no recall on it. To rebuild engine after 60K only is a rip-off from Toyota, specially when it's a wide spread problem. I will never buy Toyota anymore.

I got my Toyota Camry last year during this time. I have gotten my oil changed every time on time and recently about a couple months ago I noticed that I had to keep adding oil to my car every week, and once I noticed this I also noticed the car was getting a lot louder when idling. I was so mad because I knew I have been taking care of this car the best I can and I didn't have the money to do any major car repair.

Camry CE V4

I bought a Camry 2007 in 2009. Shortly after I got the car, I started to realize that the car is burning oil fast. After I have been driven around 1500 miles after the maintenance, the oil light comes on saying oil level is low. I showed the Toyota dealer this problem several times back in 2010, but they said car burning oil is normal. So every 1000 miles, I have to add engine oil myself.

Camry LE 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 96,313 miles

Since when I crossed about 130000 km in my 2007 Camry, I started to notice that it is burning engine oil. No white smoke, no dripping, but it still burns oil. I am a regular maintenance and self check guy so tops up or check fluids every month. Once I was shocked to find there was no oil on dip stick. Topped up and in about 2 weeks, again, found no oil in dip stick.

Dealer would not listen or fix this problem.

Interim fix, I am topping up every month till such time Toyota realizes this is the faulty engine and fixes the piston rings. To fix them myself is about 3000 dollars in Canada.

Update from Jul 9, 2015: Finally got a mail from Toyota acknowledging that some of these model cars are "reported" to have excessive oil consumption test so was asked to proceed to Dealer for a OIL CONSUMPTION test.

I got the test started and had to pay for the oil change and then the engine was sealed and i was asked to return after 2000 km. ( about 1200-1300 miles)

They topped up the oil and it took 2 liters to get to fill level ( little over 2 quarts). So till such time I hear back I need to top up a quart/1 liter every 1000 km.

Camry

  • Automatic transmission

My 2007 Toyota Camry is consuming excessive oil. I have to add oil in between oil change which I always do every 5000 miles. Recently my check engine light came on and when I took the car to the shop I was told that the engine is burning oil. Even if the oxygen sensors and the catalytic converters were replaced, the problem won't be fix because the piston rings will always be affected (even if replaced), which will cause again a leak of the oil into the exhaust system. So checking engine light will come on again.

Camry CE 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 36,000 miles

We bought this brand new 2007 Camry from dealer back in 2006. It has been maintained through Toyota dealers (Longo Toyota most of time) since then. In Jan 2012, the engine sounded abnormal. We took it to the dealer and was told that there was oil "leaking" and the car was out of warranty. We paid out of own pocket to fix the "oil leaking" as suggested by the dealer, but the oil still keeps disappearing after around 2000 miles' driving. Now it is getting worse and worse, I have to check oil level and add 1 quart every 500 miles!

I am so blasted PISSED! I noticed that the oil lamp light started coming on. I went to Toyota, they claim I had an oil leak and had to replace the head gaskets and they did a synthetic oil change. Not even 2 damn months, the maintenance light comes on and the oil lamp. I check, NO OIL!.

I took it back this morning screaming at the service guy...poor him...because he tells me I didn't get an oil change there and the last time I changed my oil filter was 10,000 miles ago and I had to explain then how the hell did I get the dealership sticker telling me when to come in? I don't have a sticker creator just to create fake oil change stickers. I demanded that they change my oil for free with synthetic or I needed to speak to the supervisor. He then tells me, well, I also think you may have a motor oil consumption problem. I need you to bring back the car in 1500 miles. I said, "Do you know I JUST finished paying off this car in November 2014?". I work as an educator...I don't have money for this. He said, well, Toyota will fix a limited number but only if your under 60,000 miles. He then had the NERVE to suggest what about a new Toyota??? I am like ARE YOU JUST A PLAIN IDIOT?

This is crazy. I am telling everyone how much I hate Toyota and why they should purchase a Honda, Infiniti, Acura, Kia, Hyundai, lol- Anything BUT Toyota. They need to fix this...no one has money for this crap!!!!! I joined the class action lawsuit too! They need to A: Replace all the ENGINES or B: GIVE US THE MONEY IT COST FOR THE ENGINES FOR THOSE THAT WILL HAVE TO GET NEW VEHICLES.

Since 7/27/11 is the first time I realized the car was burning oil and mind you I regularly change the oil and use the very best oil and yet about a month or 1,000. miles I need a new quart of oil. So now we check it every two weeks. No leaking just burning the oil. Very concerning.

Camry XLE 4cl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 38,000 miles

I purchased a 2007 Toyota Camry XLE in October 2013 with 33,000 miles on it. When it was time for the second oil change I noticed it was low on oil. The dealership said that they are aware that the Camry's are burning oil and they will do an oil consumption test to send to Toyota to see if they will replace the motor. After having the oil consumption test completed Toyota is saying that burning half a quart of oil every 1,000 miles is nothing to be concerned about. The spark plugs feel like they need changed at this time because the vehicle does not want to accelerate when getting onto the interstate. The Dealership has said that the oil burning has nothing to do with my spark plugs.

We purchased this Toyota on their great reputation and Toyota is not living up to that. I feel this should be recalled. I also know of two other people who had this problem and Toyota replaced their engines for them but only after they blew up.
