Camry V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 131,000 miles

I was coasting into a parking spot in a public parking garage when my 2007 Toyota Camry suddenly started to accelerate on its own. I was stunned and remember thinking "Why is this car accelerating?". I hit the brake, but there was not enough time to stop the car before it crashed into a large concrete pillar at the end of the parking spot. There was significant damage to the front bumper, grill and hood of the car, and the car had to be towed.

After calling Toyota, they sent an inspector who downloaded data from the Event Data Recorder (EDR). The data showed that indeed, as I had experienced, the car had accelerated from 2.5 mph at about 2 seconds before impact to 9 mph at the time of impact. The EDR showed that the brake went on just before the impact, even though the accelerator rate and RPMs remained elevated (usually indicating that the gas pedal is depressed). I don't drive two footed, so how could the accelerator pedal remain depressed at the same time that the brake was pushed, given that I don't, nor have I ever, driven two-footed.

Toyota said that the inspection showed that weren't any problems with the brake or accelerator pedals and dismissed my questions about how both could be depressed at the same time in the sequence shown by the EDR. I won't drive the car again. My experience seems very similar to others by owners of Camry's in the 2005-2007 model years.

Today while I was stopped at a red light, my foot firmly on the brake pedal, my car suddenly lurched forward toward the car in front of me. It scared me because I thought I would hit the car. I lifted my foot off the brake and then jammed on the brakes and just avoided the car. What is so unsettling is that it happened out of no where. I'm afraid to drive my car should this happen again.

lurches forward when foot is on brake and wont stop revving

My 2007 Camry on several occasions when stopping or slowing down, engine revs up and car lurches forward while my foot is on the brake and car wouldn't come to a stop no matter how hard I stepped on the brake. A very scary situation. I put the car in neutral and engine was still reving at a high speed until I shut off the ignition I then restarted then it was OK. In the past year this has happened to me about 10 times..

Camry SE 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 66,137 miles

My father was pulling into a parking lot at Trader Joes in Springfield, VA when the 2007 Camry suddenly accelerated and lunged forward real hard hitting a light pole on the driver side front and a parked car on the passenger side front. My father stepped on the brake pedal has hard as he could but the damage was already done. Thankfully he had the presence of mind to put the car in neutral and shut the engine off. He was taken to the Emergency Room for treatment and x-rays showed he sustained a hairline fracture on his sternum.

If anyone has a Camry, don't take any chances...GET RID OF IT! This accident caused my insurance company to total the car.

I was driving my car on a damp day in November entering on to I-95 northbound from Rt 273. As I rounded the ramp curve, the car sudden accelerated across 4 lanes of traffic. The police tell me I hit another car before spinning and landing on the guardrail facing the oncoming traffic. I don't recall what happened as the airbags had deployed. I do remember applying the brakes and car would not stop. I also remember trying to put on a turn signal but that would not work either. I had my elderly mother in the car taking her to a doctor appointment. Of course we never made it. She was hospitalized with injuries to her face, leg abdomen and chest until mid-December. It was awful. The car was totaled. We were blessed to walk away.

I reported this to Toyota who sent an investigator but eventually told me nothing was wrong with the car. Like I would intentionally speed across 4 lanes of interstate traffic???? Really???? With my mom in the car??? Really????

Toyota had a recall on this car for that year. I refuse to believe nothing was wrong with the car at the time of the accident.

I unfortunately experienced sudden unintended acceleration with my newly acquired 2007 Camry. I stopped the car to let people out...then tried to move it up a few feet to park it in front of the garage. It suddenly accelerated to high speed and blew right through the garage in an explosion of glass and boards. It was horrifying and I thought I was going to come right out the other side. However, it was stopped by a tractor and other heavy garage equipment but the tires kept spinning and smoking. I thought it would catch on fire. My son told me to turn the key off and get out fast. The only way out was over the back passenger seat. I just got my car back...looks beautiful...after doing $7000 worth of repairs. My son parked it in the garage at Xmas and it's been right there ever since...I'm afraid to drive it...it might happen again...maybe in traffic. No one would want to buy it with it's history. I'm really bummed...I don't want to sell it...I loved that car!

Last Friday I was told by the service people that they could not find anything wrong with the vehicle. The car, on it's own, will surge forward at any time. It almost feels like something is wrong with gas pedal or fuel injectors.

Camry 4 Cy

  • Automatic transmission

I continue to have a problem with my gas pedal. It seems to accelerate on it's own, and even after hitting the break it does not stop. It has happened to me 3 times since I've had the car. Each time I take it to the Dealer, they say they can not duplicate the problem, and send me back on the road with a dangerous car. I DO NOT want to drive this car any longer, and Toyota will NOT take it back. I have started a complaint form, which the 1-800 number for Toyota advise me to do. They also said it will take about 40 days to hear something back. My car that I pay for, now just sits, because it's too dangerous to risk driving it with my kids. It's costing me some money to rent a car, because Toyota will not pay for a loaner. If anyone knows what I can do to get rid of this car please contact me. mcamor@myway.com

I have been driving over thirty years and never have been confused about which pedal to push when braking or accelerating (except perhaps when I was learning at eighteen). I was slowed down and ready to turn into a parking space when suddenly the car surged forward with the engine racing. I don't remember whether I had been braked and then pressed lightly on the gas pedal to pull into the space or not. I tend to think this is what I did, but certainly wouldn't have pressed it to the floor or pressed it hardly at all to pull into the parking space. The car took off and no matter how much I pressed on the brake, it had a life of its own and was out of control. I had an eerie sense of calm in the midst of feeling terror, but felt I had to stay with what was happening, hands on wheel, and trying to brake. It was a parking lot of a restaurant and fortunately there weren't any bystanders and there was a clear space ahead right into a snow bank. The car was so crazed and felt as if a demon had taken control of it that it kept on going and flew over the snow bank, whereby we were slightly air borne. It crossed a minor road and hit a small tree, uprooting it, and the guard rail. Just beyond the guard rail was a car at the Taco Bell restaurant. If we hadn't been stopped by the tree and guard rail, we would have hit the car and gone into Taco Bell. When the car stopped, the engine was still racing as someone was stepping on the pedal. The tires were spinning and the engine smoking. My husband (in the passenger seat) and I immediately jumped out of the car and the engine continued to race and tires spin. We looked down at the floor mat thinking that maybe the gas pedal had been stuck, but it wasn't. I remembered that in October I received a post card from Toyota indicating that there was a recall on floor mats. I went out to check the floor mat and couldn't see how it would post a problem and can't remember if I removed it and used our mat from our other car or not. We had only had the car a couple of months when we received the recall post card in the mail. When this was happening, I immediately thought it was the mat, but after getting out of the car, the engine was still racing and the mat was normal. I know I did not press on the gas pedal and think I was braking. This car had a mind of its own and there was no way stopping it. Fortunately, we are not injured except for sore muscles and my husband may have a broken rib from the landing and impact. I know that I do not ever want to climb into this car again. Never! I believe, especially after reading other testimonies of owners of other Toyota makes that this is the same experience and I also talked to someone yesterday who had a Camry a few years ago that did the same thing but she was on an empty street and the car surged to 70 mph and wouldn't stop for a long time. When the car was turned on again, it acted normal, and although it might be that they will find nothing and repair the front end, I do not ever want to get int his particular car again. In fact, I am very fearful of any car because of computerized mechanisms and the problem of this nature..
