I started noticing it while driving with snow tires which were put on in November 2009--unsure exactly when as dismissed it as being the sound of snow tires! Change back to regular summer tires in April and noise persisted. I thought it was just my paranoia but finally took it to my mechanic last week. Cost of replacing this is horrendous [to me]!
My mechanic is searching for possible blind recall and possible less expensive replacemnt for the rear wheel bearings. He has worked on multiple Toyotas and has been my mechanic for 17 years. It is his opinion that this is really a rare thing to happen to such a relatively new car and to a Toyota. I just retired and hoped any major repairs such as this would not be for a number of years...and am seething that car manufacturers continue to make inferior products. My prior vehicle, a 1995 Saturn, is still running, still few major repairs at over 300,000 miles. That is more what I expected and hoped would be the case with a supposedly reliable Toyota in my retirement years.

These Michelin tires were made in 2007 and were on a 2008 car. They were smooth in places and raised in other places. One tire had dry rot or cracks in the side wall and another tire had the wires from the steel belts comng through. The tire man said it looked like the dealer had taken the new tires off and put on old tires on a new car. I was shocked that 2 year old tires were totally worn out and had to be replaced. These tires had been rotated and balanced as they should have been.
