I bought this car new in 2011. I bought the extended warranty and never spent a dime on repairs, other than normal maintenance. The oil was changed every 5K miles. One week after the last oil change, I was gently accelerating onto the freeway and head a loud POP, and then a really bad grinding. I called my mechanic, who was a mile away, and when he looked closely, he found a rod through the block. The cost to repair, around 5K, with a used engine. He stated that in 40+ years, he had never seen a Toyota 4 cylinder engine blow up. The extended warranty had run out the year before. Good timing, huh?
I called Toyota to see if they could help since their engines had a stellar reputation got longevity. They pretty much said F*** You, it's out of warranty, nothing we can do. So much for Toyota wanting to find out just why their stellar engine exploded. I said I bet TRD takes a Joe Gibbs engine apart if it fails.
So, I sold the car for junk and got a 99 Camry LE which I am still driving. My son put over 300K on his 99 LE.
I doubt I will buy another new Camry, and will definitely keep the extended warranty intact. I have totally lost faith in Toyota's reliability. I expected that car to last for several more years.
