I took the car to a certified mechanic and he charged me $350 to change the steering rod. Before I could drive off, it still made the sound. i took it back and mechanic suggested that he would have to inset a U shaped cushion and he would charge an additional $250. My husband took the car to 3 other mechanics and they all mentioned that this is a common unfixable problem with Toyota Camry. One mechanic tightened some part and it was OK a few days but now the thud sound is back. Why has Toyota not called in these cars and offered to fix this common problem???

Car has been making a popping noise when turning the steering wheel, which you can also feel, for the last couple years since about 50,000 miles. It's getting really annoying, but does not seem to affect the quality of the steering. Finally took to dealership's service department to get it checked out this month at 90,000 miles and they told me I needed to replace the intermediate steering shaft, but that it was not a safety issue. Online Toyota owner forums I have read state that this is an ongoing problem with older model Camrys, Highlanders and other vehicles too, but there has been no TSB on this yet for mine. Solutions in the past also included a much less expensive lubrication kit.

First noticed clicking sound when turning left about 6 mos ago & you could feel slight hesitation in the steering wheel. Now steering is stiff & does not feel at all like it did before this problem developed. Steering also much stiffer than previous 1997 Camry. Had my mechanic check it out. No obvious problem he could find. Said not a hazard & to let it go rather than take to dealer for ???. Recently drove rental Malibu & Cruz recently & steering was MUCH better than my Camry. This has never been the case in the past!

When I pull out of a parking spot or driveway- especially when turning to the left there is a loud "popping" noise. I first heard it and mentioned it to my hubby who doesn't hear as well as I do. Well when he was standing outside as I was pulling out of the driveway and heard it then I knew ut was loud. We took it to the dealership and they kept it for a week - the mechanic drove it back & forth to work (which took miles from my warranty) and said he never heard a thing BUT the day we were picking it up as he pulled out of the parking spot he heard the "pop". He put up on rack and said it was the "accusatory" and it was suppose to do that to test the anti-brake lock system. I've had it in at least 4-5 times and keep getting run around. I know others with 2011 camry and theirs doesn't do this.

Apparently this is a theme for 2009-2011 Camry's having a popping sound when turning. I hadn't heard or noticed an issue but when we took the car to the dealer to have it inspected and fix an unrelated issue, they informed us about the intermediate shaft needing to be replaced. That's when the hubby said he thought he was hearing something but shrugged it off to road noise as it wasn't something that was happening on a regular. Thank goodness we still had time on that extended warranty! Owned only Toyota's and never had this issue and only have 73,500 miles on the Camry which isn't horrible by today's standards.
