My sister and I purchased a brand new red Toyota Camry XLE on 3/28/2019.
-Between 3/28 (date of purchase) and 8/8/19 while driving the car, steering wheel seemed to try to turn right on its own. Different from the lane sensor that car had. Seemed very minor and inconsequential
-On 8/8/19, when the odometer had only 1,720 miles, when engine was turned on, it sounded funny, but did not appear to be anything alarming.
-Stopped a few houses down on corner at the STOP sign to do a U-turn. However, when the steering wheel was turned to the left, it jerked violently to the right, accelerated violently on its own, the engine made a horrible noise, brushed on side of parked car, crashed against a tree nearby and stopped. This all took virtually a couple of seconds. The airbags did not deploy.
-We contacted our insurance company requesting that the car be towed to a Toyota Dealership so that the cause of the malfunction could be investigated since there was no doubt whatsoever that this was an engine major malfunction.
-My sister had excruciating pain and the next day it was determined she had a L1 fracture.
-After the accident we found out that NHTSA had a recall for our car one day before we took possession. Recall was on 3/27 and we took possession of the car on 3/28. No one informed us. The second recall was on 6/28 and again we were never informed. We have the Internet printout , but everyone kept denying it. However, we see that in September 2019, a month after the crash, Toyota recalled 3.8 million vehicles.
-We were told by Toyota that because the car had been totaled, it was impossible to investigate the cause of the crash. However, up to February 2021 we have been receiving the electronic Monthly Vehicle Health Reports by email. It keeps alerting to engine malfunctions. We only stopped receiving them because our email address has changed. Obviously, Toyota knows but won’t admit that this was a major malfunction in this car. Since this happened, we have been writing to the dealership as well as to the Toyota Corporate Offices in Texas. The only answer they give verbally through an administrative assistant is that they were unable to investigate because the car was totaled.
