Camry SE 2.5L I-4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 88,000 miles

Where do I begin...having major component issues with my first 2 used vehicle I finally bit the bullet and purchased a brand new vehicle. I chose Toyota because of the various stories of Toyotas lasting forever when cared for properly and honestly even the neglected ones never had issues that I'd heard of. My 2019 Toyota Camry SE automatic transmission got to 88k miles and within one week I experienced dragging/hesitating when the gears shifted, especially after stopping and going.

My car has routinely been serviced with a Toyota dealership. I keep it spotless and well maintained. It had gotten colder in this particular week in Illinois so I presumed the cold was to blame. After 2 days of the dragging/hesitating gears when shifting the third day led to the inability to leave first gear and high RPM's. I basically rolled into a nearby parking lot. I wasn't able to reverse for several minutes. I waited a bit and then it let me reverse and eventually the entire transmission stopped functioning. I could shift the gear stick but it wouldn't change the care into any gears. Brought it into my local Toyota dealer only to be told that it would need a new transmission priced at $11,000 for a new one...I'm at a stand still because this car absolutely shouldn't be having transmission problems.

Through deep research I've found multiple accounts of transmission problems with this year/model/make but it's been inconclusive. I asked about service bulletins because I read it could just need a computer module update but I was told by Toyota that it would have got picked up by their computer. This is super frustrating because I trusted Toyota to provide me a long term reliable vehicle but here we are. There hasn't been a resolution from Toyota yet but I'm certainly going to fight this because this is a $30k vehicle that I've taken care of through and through!

Camry XSE 2.5L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 159,689 miles

There were noticeable transmission symptoms from the very beginning; namely, hard shifts and whining of the gears at the torque converter in the transmission housing. Over the course of 100,000 miles, instrument panel warnings from electric components associated with drive assist features began to light up. The car was taken to the dealership where it was purchased for a diagnostic procedure resulting in the battery being replaced but to no avail. Over the course of the next 50-55,000 miles, every warning light for every safety feature were triggered. Rear cross traffic alert, rear camera failure, lane departure, high beam headlight indicator, primary collision system, secondary collision system, and an entire host of other drivetrain/transmission related warning indicators. Ultimately, the transmission gave out while in transit and the vehicle wouldn't move in any gear resulting in untimely transmission failure. so much for elite drivability!

Camry XSE 2.5L 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 175,200 miles

Total transmission failure, the car will not move, went out on me while I was driving. I don't have the money to get her repaired, have to default on loan and then file bankruptcy to discharge the debt. This totally sucks.

Camry LS

  • Automatic transmission
  • 57,000 miles

The problem started with a rattling sound in the left of the engine compartment. The dealership replaced the left axle, but the sound was still present, which they located as an interior transmission problem. The car only has 57,000 miles, mostly highway. The vehicle is out of warrantee by time, and they would not give a grace period. They want $11,000 to put in a used (rebuilt) transmission.
