Engine light ON at 22960 miles on July-2026 and it just pass 3 years or 36K miles warranty on Mar-2026. Brought to the dealer in Dallas, said error code P0420 and had to replace catalytic converter (crack on the honeycomb) and I had to pay almost 2500 for out of warranty. Called Toyota North America about the problem and this is Federal require 8 yrs or 80K mile warranty on emission (with help from Google information). Beginning they said I had to pay, requested to talk to manager, they said I have to wait 24 hrs. to get the answer from manager. Called again and asked for the email to confirm the reason reject warranty but they could not do it. Late afternoon the service advisor text and let me know Toyota is going to warranty repair after all. Next day a lady from Toyota North America called & said they honored the warranty and I have only 1 year warranty. But to the record, dealer don't know what cause the crack (no accident or anything), they just said it was overheat. I request the data scan from service tech a copy.
Is it a defective item or may be after 1 year it would happen again? I wonder what root cause. My wife said I should trade the car because we had the problem with Toyota van before and kept fixing one to another (lot of sensors problem, gas vapor leak, water leak from roof, front brake wrap, fail front brake at 45K and almost roll over HWY 10)
