I noticed two other complaints about this same issue. This car leaks fuel around the Fuel cap. It doesn't matter if it is full. It gets wet. Then it smells. The dealer of course said they have never seen the problem. But they would be glad to look at it for $140.00 per hour. If anyone has any ideas, please pass them along.

gas intake leak gas intake leak gas intake leak

Problem started after 1 month I bought the car on August 2018. 1 day under the hot weather while walking to the parking lot after got out of work, I smell very strong gas when came close to my car, surprise to find out gas was leaking out from the gas cap. Called the dealer nearby, they asked if I need the car to be tolled to the dealer (very nice and care for customer) if not I still need to bring it in ASAP cause it is safety concern. Brought it in next day, they checked it but can’t find anything, after I explained the problem, they suggested to leave the car for a few days. After a few attempts, not sure what have they found out but they replaced charcoal canister, and that was the end of 2018. After that I moved to Texas on April and driving for a while. Beginning of this year 2020 the problem started again. Since then it happen a few times after I filled up the gas. The other day I smelled gas while I’m in the garage, open the door I found gas leaking again from the cap, right away I drove to the dealer nearby to have them check. Explain everything and gave them all information of what had happened before and now. After 15 minutes, they said they can’t do anything because they said it is still under warranty and they can’t redo what the previous dealer had done, they need to talk to the warranty lady first before they start working on the car, asked me to bring it back tomorrow morning because the lady is not there now. I then bring it home and back the next day. Waiting for 3 hours thinking they have talked to the warranty lady and she agreed for them to start working on it. They told me they will change the gas tank just have to wait for the second approval from another tech guy. Waiting for another hour, nobody tell me what is going on, I have to go ask them. Another 15 minutes the service assistant came back told me, they can’t find anything wrong with it, so manufacture is not responsible for any cost, I will have to pay over 200$ for the diagnose and tell me don’t overfill the gas next time. I did not agree to pay anything since it’s still under warranty, that’s why I have to come back in the morning so they can talked to the warranty lady. If she did not agree to whatever why they did not tell me but working on it and now I have to pay for what they could not figure out. What can I do since they have my car key and won’t let me go if I don’t pay even I did not agree since beginning. What more funny, she even told me to trade in the car and let someone else deal with the problem. What a joke, the problem didn’t just happen 1 time, if I overfill the gas, why only happen when it is hot day. I’m not an 18 year old that just gets my first car and don’t know how to fill up gas. They have me waited for half a day, told me 1 thing then another. They never answer me how to not overfill because I have always pump gas same way and never top off gas, always hang up the pump when it stop pumping. The service assistant girl told me next time fill up gas just stop before the pump stop. So now driving Toyota I have to calculate how much I need before I pump gas? Instead of figure out how to solve the problem, they don’t even want to keep the card to duplicate problem, they just wanted me pay and leave. They keep saying it’s not their responsibility. I’m the one who responsible for everything. What more worse is that I called Toyota customer care, doesn’t matter what I explained, he told me he is not mechanic so he only base on what the service manager told him. Toyota can’t do anything to help, he suggests me to bring to another dealer service for 2nd opinion, but yes If they can’t find anything I will be the one responsible for the diagnose. I don’t have that many 200$ to pay for something the manufacture have to take care. Now I’m stuck with a new car with gas leaking problem that never be solved because Toyota can’t have any tech to figure out what’s wrong with it so they just blame that problem on me. I just worry someone may get hurt if they walk by with a cigarettes while the car is leaking gas. For sure no more toyota in my upcoming car shopping.

gas intake leak gas intake leak

Took car back to dealership and showed them problem. They thought I overfilled it. Returned with pictures showing gas stains on side of car under gas intake. They replaced charcoal fuel filter and pump. Filled car again a few days ago (did not top off) and this morning noticed new fuel stains on cardboard placed under gas intake. Also paper towel put under gas cap was soaked with gas. The dealership seems more concerned with selling cars then servicing them. Not sure what I'll do. I like the car and love the mileage. Maybe I'll just fill to 3/4 full but this is the 1st car I've ever bought new (and w/o financing) so it's a bit of a kick in the teeth. Also had to have center tough screen console replaced but that's another complaint.

Update from Jun 9, 2019: New gas cap solved fuel leak issue.

Update from Apr 11, 2020: New gas cap did not solve issue. Happening again twice this year. Back in shop right now looking for solutions.
