Celica GTS

  • Manual transmission
  • 65,000 miles

Ok the engine in the GTS is not reliable. The first time I blew the engine, it was simply for driving the car aggresively. One day the engine light goes on. After a few days it shuts off. A month latter, I hear noises from the engine and bring it in the shop. Since I was just out of warrantee, Toyota agreed to split the bill with me. It was still very very painfull for the pocket book.

Another 65000 miles later, the same thing hapenned again! And this time I drove the car less agressively by far. The engine just does not last on these cars!

The rest of the car is completely awesome and it drives, handles, and brakes like a go-cart. It was so much fun to drive. I really really miss it. I am in the market for a used car right now and I am tempted to look at these again. However, I just cannot buy another one for fear that I will have a $5000 repair bill suddenly at any moment. It does not matter what mileage the used cars have - you are playing roulette.

I think they may have fixed the design flaw in the engine by 2002 but you have to be carefull when buying a 2000!

Celica GTS

  • Manual transmission
  • 72,000 miles

I am writing in regard to my experience with Russell Toyota here in Maryland. I recently had my car serviced for $3,300.00 worth of engine work. Two weeks later, my car completely shuts down. Now I have been informed that it will cost $6,000.00 to have my car repaired. That would bring my total to close to $10,000.00.

My car was running and operating before I took it to these people, and now my car is not. I have a 2000 Toyota Celica GTS that has 72,000 miles on it. They told me I could buy a used engine for $4,000.00 that has 30,000 more miles on it than the engine that is in my car presently.

I wish to complain to anyone that can help me with my problem. The conflict resolution department that Toyota referred me to just happens to be at Russell Toyota so I am not optimistic about the out come from them.

Please, direct me to any agencies or persons that I can contact to try to resolve my problem.

Thank you!
