Smell of gasoline. Found a stream of gasoline squirting from a crack in the gas tank on to the exhaust pipe heat barrier. Upon examination of tank found a defect in the gas tank manufacturing process. It looked like during the stamping of the sheet metal, a portion of the metal folded over causing a weaken area of about 1 inch where the metal is bent over on itself. I replaced the defective gas tank with a new one purchased from Toyota and it lasted about 18 months before it experienced the same problem. There is a problem seeing this defect in the new tank because of the undercoating applied.I consider this to be a hazardous defect because the leak occurs just above the the exhaust pipe radiant heat sheild.

Second incident of gas tank leaking. First leak was welded by personal mechanic. He indicated a separate component was rubbing on the gas tank, causing a hole to form. Since the exhaust system is located in such close proximity to the fuel tank, a severe fire hazard exists, which could become life threatening.

Gas tank seam split causing fuel to not drip but stream down onto exhuast pipe, car has been driven approximantly 30-40 miles aday under this circumstance until found, it a wonder that the vehicle did not catch fire or explode, was unawear of this problem until notice of gas on driveway, had been smelling gas ever since the motor was replaced in the vehicle at 43,000 at which point the motor had a thrown rod and was replaced by dealer, during the replacement the host that was used to replace motor leaked causing the new motor to fall into the car, thus crushing the oil pan, not sure if that incident strained the gas lines causing the seam to split in gas tank but it sure does seem odd that the tank is spilt at only 59,000 miles, Toyota claims that there is a 2 week wait peroid on the tank for this vehicle quote " there on national backorder" which also makes me think that others have had a simliar problem with the gas tank leaking in this vehicle, also please note that I was informed by the Ohio epa station that most 90-95 corrollas failed the epa gude lines on one test our vehicle failed the hydrocarbon which the max was 220 and this vehicle was 858, thats a considerable difference I have my wife and kids in this vehcile throuhout the day and thinking that they could have been seriuosly injured or killed by the gas leak concerns me very much.
