Corolla S 1.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 69,000 miles

AFTER HAVING THIS TO MY MECHANIC FOR THE SECOND TIME, WITH TWO FLATBED TOWING COSTS I THINK IT IS FIXED. I HAVE READ A LOT OF REVIEWS ABOUT "ECM PROBLEMS" FROM CUSTOMERS , THAT TOYOTA ALSO HAD A RECALL ON ECM ISSUES ,I THINK MY MECHANIC FOUND A SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS PROBLEM. THE MECHANIC FOUND THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS NOT PUMPING GAS. THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY IS MOUNTED IN THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK AND IS SUBMERGED IN THE GAS. ONE OF THE ELECTRICAL WIRES GOING TO THE PUMP AT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR AT THE TOP OF THE PUMP WAS BURNED UP( METAL AND PLASTIC PARTS). AS THE USE OF THE PUMP HEATED THIS CONNECTION IT WOULD ARC AND BURN CAUSING INTERMITTENT FUEL PUMP OPERATION. THUS EXPLAINING WHEN CAR WAS COLD IT WOULD START THEN AFTER RUNNING AND SHUT OFF IT WOULD CRANK AND NOT START. REMEMBER THIS ITEM IS IN THE TOP INSIDE THE FUEL TANK(BOOM!). I THINK SOME OF THE SO CALLED "ECM PROBLEMS" WERE REALLY THIS PROBLEM AND NEVER DIAGNOSED. STALLING,LOSS OF POWER AND NOT STARTING. TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE PICKED THIS UP ,BUT IT SEEMS THEY TAKE 4 YEARS TO ISSUE RECALLS.

Corolla 1.4L

  • Manual transmission
  • 50,000 miles

This is a great car however this problem has never been solved. If the car is driven at a constant speed it runs perfectly. But if you have to stop driving on a stop sign and start driving again the engine looses power and sometimes the engine shuts down and has to be started again. The symptoms are very similar to lack of fuel or ignition fault. It would be greatly appreciated if you can provide support to solve this issue.

Thank you in advance,

Corolla

  • Manual transmission
  • 59,000 miles

Car stalled at a light last evening, tried once or twice unsuccessfully to get it started. It would start but stall within 2 or 3 seconds. Finally got it started, but check engine light came on. Looked up that light in our manual, and it said take it to the dealer. We drove it about 15 miles, parked it to go into a store, and then it would not start at all. Couldn't get it towed til the next morning. Had it towed to our very good mechanic, who checked it and says it needs to be taken to dealership for a new computer, which should be under warranty.
