The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Corolla. While driving various speeds, the factory spare wheel fractured on the rear passenger side. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. An unknown dealer and the manufacturer were contacted and did not assist. The failure mileage were unknown. The consumer stated the after driving approximately 5 miles at 40 mph the vehicle was riding rough. The spare tire experienced tread separation. Updated 12/11/2017

Toyota was supposed to replace the rusted wheels but it appears they either just repainted them or replaced them with another defective wheel. The wheels are rusting excessively. I received a recall notice advising me that my passenger side airbag was on recall list but part is not available at this time no mention was made of the driver side or side impact airbags. When I telephoned Toyota, I was told by Toyota that no recall was being issued for driver side or side impact airbags. This car has had surge issues, rusted wheels, tires 6 and 8 years old at time car was purchased as a brand new vehicle, now shrapnel danger from airbags with no recall. I put 8500 miles on car first year I owned it. Then surge occurred and now it only has 14500 miles since I am afraid to drive it. Toyota wants me to give it to dealer to hold until it is repaired. No guarantee re damage due to car sitting on dealers lot for months I.e. rusted brakes, engine, etc from sitting unused for months. This is ridiculous. Toyota should be made to take back this vehicle and replace it with new Corolla. I bought it new since I was retiring and now retired and can not afford new car. So I am stuck with it and can not drive it or enjoy my retirement or visit relatives since I can not drive car on highway. It is not safe to drive.

This happened on I-95 North in Maryland between md-32 and md-175. At highway speed, the manual transmission of my 2006 Toyota Corolla came apart. The car immediately started making noise and began to shake. I lost control for a few seconds from the shaking and the feeling as if someone was pressing on the brake pedal. Once I gathered that something had failed (vs. A collision with a small object), I was able to supply extra gas and grip the wheel hard to prevent an accident. While making my way off the highway, the car squealed and grinded. I was only able to get into gear after several attempts at the two stop lights between the highway and the first parking lot I could find. I was fortunate. My research has shown that all four wheels have locked for others with this problem: www.change.org/petitions/unbearable-transmission-bearing.

I backed my 2006 Toyota Corolla into a friend's driveway, and then put the car into drive to straighten it a bit. The car suddenly without warning shot across the street (perhaps at 45-50 mph), went over a 6" high cement retaining curbing, and across a lawn into another driveway. All the while I had my foot firmly on the brake (not the gas pedal). I swerved the wheel to avoid hitting a telephone pole, and the house. I finally got the car into neutral, and at last the brakes engaged, and I was able to stop the car avoiding a pick-up truck in the driveway and a tree. During this entire time the engine was loudly revving. Other than 3 shredded tires and 2 ruined rims, the car seems to be intact. I have contacted Toyota and hope for a successful resolution. The service manager at the dealership where this vehicle was purchased, however, said that since it is not under recall there is nothing they can do. Meanwhile I will be fearful every time I get behind the wheel, which I have yet to do! 3 new tires and 2 new rims is a small price to pay - it could have been my life! had cars been passing by on this normally busy street, or children walking on the sidewalk on their way home from school - other lives as well could have been taken..this was a terrifying event! judging from all of the similar stories written regarding this make, model and year, Toyota needs to do a recall to solve this problem once and for all.
