Corolla Hatchback SE 2.0L 4 cyl

  • CVT transmission
  • 72,000 miles

On 07/30 I got a call at work from my Fiancé that her car wasn’t starting. I asked if there were any dash lights on or CEL but of course she said she didn’t know. So I get home and check out the problem and the dash lights up as normal but when you press the start button it made a quiet tick noise like it was trying to crank but then didn’t crank at all. The check engine light (CEL) lit up and there was a maintenance needed message on the dash. I scan the car and a P0335 Crankshaft Position A Circuit code came up. So I researched a little bit and nothing for the Hatchback specifically came up but the regular Corolla (years 2018 and older) came up regarding the Crankshaft Position Sensor going out.

There were also videos and posts about the fuses and relays going out but I checked them and they were fine. I found that in one video they said it’s rare but it could also be the battery, so I started checking off the list of fuses, relays and then the battery. We took it to our local Autozone and they tried testing it but said it was too dead to even test. So we ordered a new battery for about $180 but had to wait til the next day to get it. Next day comes around I have the new battery and I installed it after cleaning off the terminals, noticing they were pretty dirty and had some corrosion on them, and the car fired up after a few more cranks than usual. I let it run a bit and stood outside of the vehicle to see if I hear any odd sounds, there was nothing. I sat in the car and listened and there was nothing. The CEL went away and after scanning it again it was gone. So I nervously drove it around our neighborhood and it did fine. I parked it and scanned again and there were no codes. I even drove further, about 10-15 miles and when I got back it was fine. It’s only been a day since I installed the new battery but so far so good. I will definitely update this if anything else happens. I’m still weary of the Crankshaft Position Sensor as it is a common issue on the previous Corolla years even though the issues were with the 1.8L engine.
