Highlander V6

The SRS AIRBAG light 1st came on when I had 92,184 miles. Took in to have checked paid $99 plus tax for diagnostics of which they thought a connection was loose. So tightened the connection & all seemed fine.

4 months later it came on again @99,787 miles. Took back in for another diagnostic check, cost $106.95. This time I was told we had to replace the entire passenger air bag unit which means the entire seat had to be replaced at a quoted cost of $5,400. You can imagine my disbelief! I said no way am I paying that. Shouldn't this fall under a recall or defect with all the airbag problems? I was given the Toyota Corporate telephone number to see if they would consider paying for the replacement.

It took a couple of days & they offered to pay half. I told them that wasn't good enough or right. I was informed that the warranty is only good for 36k miles. This is insane!!!! This should not fall under any type of wear & tear and I believe airbags should be covered for the life of the vehicle. I as a customer, did nothing to cause this problem & strongly feel this is a defect & Toyota should be responsible for replacing it at no cost to me.

My dealer took the hit for the difference between what Toyota would pay & I paid $900 + tax. I told my dealer I appreciated what they did, but this is still soooooooo wrong!!!! I told Toyota Corp they really don't care about the consumer just their sales! What happens if the other side does this? The value of the 2 front airbags is almost $11,000. Seems a little excessive!!

Buyers beware about airbags. You're between a rock & a hard place! If you don't fix it & you're in an accident that was your fault your insurance may not pay if you knew you had a problem with the airbag. Lose all the way around! Doesn't make me feel very assured that Toyota's consumers problems really matter.

We even looked up airbag recalls & our vehicle fell under the model years but our problem wasn't exactly like the ones recalled. Hmmmmm.
