Entire nav panel including Bluetooth phone, radio and associated steering wheel controls completely lock out and reboots randomly since PURCHASE of the vehicle, and has continued for 5 years. I could never "replicate" the problem with the dealer during my service appointments and I couldn't get it fixed within warranty time frame. Now it's too expensive to have the "find" the problem so I am continuing to live with it. It is severely disruptive when driving, and it frightens me that the electrical shut down may eventually affect critical electrical things like steering or braking.

My Highlander is 4 years old and the navigation map is in need of updating. I asked at the dealer and they told me that the cost of the update is $169. They must price this stuff like it came form a drug company. I am talking about a $10 micro SD card and an "updated" map. Not a new map...just an updated one. You can buy a new road atlas for about $20 including the paper it is printed on. Google Maps provides updates to my telephone and tablet for free so that is what I will use when the Toyota system cannot find what I am looking for. I think a fair price for this item should be around $50 giving Toyota at least a 100% mark up for a commodity type item. IT'S A MAP!! I am baffled by the price on this item as my experience with Toyota is that their prices are generally within the realm of reasonable.

I had the same problem as many others here - radio freezes & reboots.

Temporary solution for anyone - if you press & hold the volume knob for about 5 seconds, you can force a reboot after the radio / GPS has frozen. This will at least get you back on track faster.

Dealer did a software update, though they tried to make me pay, but I had Gold warranty. To me this fix should be free - it's an obvious issue with the radio (which BTW is Panasonic)

Software update fixed the reboots (early 2018), and has a few new goodies. But - I've now noticed that on some days the screen starts out as blank until you press one of the physical buttons.

While driving home at night, I noticed that all the electronics were locked up. No volume control, could not change the radio station, could not move through the window screen on dash. None of the electronics worked. I figured when I got home I would look over the system to see what was going on. But then all of a sudden, all my lights went off, headlights, dash as well as the radio. The system did a reboot. So for about 3 or 4 seconds I had no lights while I was driving down my country road. I brought my car in for servicing, they could not find any error codes and had no reason why this happened.

The upgraded Entune enabled entertainment/navigation system has never worked properly. The system frequently drops Bluetooth connectivity and will not reconnect to any devices until they are manually removed, then paired again. Several times now the system has randomly rebooted to default settings. Plugging in a phone via the USB cable will frequently disable Bluetooth, once again until everything has been removed and paired again. Voice commands do not work, even for the dealer's technician.

The head unit was replaced on the third visit to resolve the issues. The fourth visit was left at, "iPhones don't work with this system, get an Android instead."

I'd say that's not a solution, given the iPhone is probably the most popular smartphone on the market.

Most days we just end up listening to FM radio or CDs thanks to the system's unreliability.
