Whining noise began out of nowhere, Toyota specialist stated it is final drive in transmission. This should be a recall issue. Considering this has happened to thousands of people and that the transmission is on back order due to this issue should be reason enough for toyota to be liable.

We bought our Highlander used with 43k miles in April 2021. The extended warranty we purchased expired at 80k miles. Now, at 89k miles there is a whining noise when accelerating and has slow acceleration. Quote from local dealer states "trans has internal problem causing noise. needs trans assemble". Quote for the transmission assembly is $11,741.41 - for a car that is four years old! According to the dealers inspection of the transmission fluid was fine (check in green box). I verbally asked the technician to confirm the transmission fluid had been checked and he stated it was and that it was fine.

I am disappointed both that it happened and that they were unwilling to do anything about it as I am out of the warranty by mileage. My question to Toyota is, why would I want to buy another one?? I bought the car that I believed to have to best track record, and it failed prematurely! I did say this to them and there was no real answer. They basically said, we have you covered until 60K. That's it!

Whirring sound started a couple months back, I dont recall when or what might have started it, its even possible it was after maintenance was done(maybe even tranmission fluid replacement). But after 2 months or so it got noticeably worse and at a level that anyone could tell it is a ticking bomb to failure. Noise is so loud once I hit 40 mph that I'm expecting any moment of failure(this is as of today, yesterday it was bad but not as loud at such a lower speed, before was 50mph).
I use my vehicle for work, its my livelihood, and unfortunately i am not in a position to wait nor even pay for a cheaper option of rebuild or cheap replacement, so I am at a loss if I cannot get any help from Toyota on this issue.
