About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
As I was leaving the highway via the exit, I stopped at the end of ramp leading to secondary highway. The vehicle's engine then unexpectedly accelerated while my foot was on the brake. The brakes seemed to barely keep it from propelling. I immediately put the car in neutral and the rpms returned to normal.

I was leaving a supermarket parking lot on an incline. The speed was approximately less than 2 mph. The vehicle suddenly revved loudly, attempting to lunge forward. I immediately applied brakes with substantial force, barely stopping the vehicle. I then put the car in neutral. The engine returned to normal rpms. I placed the car in drive without problem, returning home.

Check engine light came one. Went to local Toyota dealership. Told the gas cap/fuel pipe needed to be replaced because it had possible corrosion. Was told this was not covered under the extended warranty. Did not locate the exact problem, charged me a diagnostic fee. 2004 Toyota Matrix, 73,000 miles, extended "bumper to bumper" warranty.

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Matrix. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the vehicle began to lose power and the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where who confirmed that the fuel pipe needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired by the dealer. The failure mileage was 54,387.

2004 Matrix:1 engine light, 2dealer says gas cap and filler neck replacement required.4 years old known for this problem. Dealer says over 200 backorders for this part.

2004 Toyota Matrix purchased 12/8/03 is supposed to get at least 26 mpg in city traffic. Mine consistently gets no more than 21 mpg. Dealer can find nothing wrong but something is, either false advertising for the entire Matrix line or something with this car. I would not have traded a paid up 99 corolla that got 26 mpg for this car, had I known it would cost me far more to run (as well as to finance).
